Cross-Cultural Issues in Art provides an engaging introduction to aesthetic concepts; expanding the discussion beyond the usual Western theorists and Western examples. Steven Leuthold discusses both contemporary and historical issues and examples; incorporating a range of detailed case studies from African; Asian; European; Latin American; Middle Eastern and Native American art. Individual chapters address broad intercultural issues in art; including Art and Culture; Primitivism and Otherness; Colonialism; Nationalism; Art and Religion; Symbolism and Interpretation; Style and Ethnicity; A Sense of Place; Art and Social Order; Gender; and the Self; considering these themes as constructs that frame our understanding of art.Cross-Cultural Issues in Art draws upon ideas and case studies from cultural and critical studies; art history; ethno-aesthetics and area studies; visual anthropology; and philosophy; and will be useful for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in these fields.

I own an absolutely frightening stash of beads and other components. so I was thrilled to find finished pieces in "Jewelry Inspirations" that showed me possible uses for many of my inventory items. Of the books 1000 photos I bookmarked at least 90 for future reference.No. this is not a "how-to" book. There are no instructions or materials lists for the projects. But if youve ever experienced "beaders block". when a beautiful component stubbornly refuses to tell you what it wants. this book should kick-start your creativity. And if I cant figure out how to make something Ive bookmarked Ill refer to a book or magazine from my jewelry-making library.I do agree that the book contains some duplicate photos. where some items are included in more than one category. so perhaps the author did cheat just a little bit.Id bet that many of this books critical reviews reflected the preferences of the reviewer. I did note the absence of dainty. girly crystal pieces. but I didnt miss them at all since they dont appeal to me. To each his/her own!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. fabulous bookBy MichelleLove this book. I needed inspiration and this is it!!!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is FOR inspiration....By CustomerWhile some may not have liked. saying it only had average designs. I found that it sparked some ideas for ME! It isnt meant to be a pattern book or things for you to copy exactly---it is to give you that "spark" for something you may not have considered previously. I feel like the book does that. If I wanted a pattern to copy exactly I would log into 1 of the beading magazines or buy additional books about a certain type of beading/metalwork. This is for inspiration and it does that. Who wants to wear the exact same thing as everyone else anyways? Not me....Im unique and like to keep it that way--all my work is UNIQUE as well. I do recommend this especially if you are having some sort of "block" :)
