GREAT photos and interesting stuffBy Deborah KeatingPort Jervis not a big city; so theres not a lot of books on it. This was so interesting. It was a gift for my mother; she loves it. We are going to see some of the stuff we dont recognize. If you know Port Jervis; I highly recommend this look back.1 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Welfare CityBy Saya NoelAs this book shows it was once a nice town; but unfortunately it has gone down-hill. I like the old photos. I wish more of the orginal buildings still existed. The small Library is the best thing in Port Jervis. I love the place and the staff; they are wonderful. They need more funding as they deserve it! Manny of the people in the town are receiving welfare services and are in severe need of education and parenting classes. The big wigs are making feeble attempts to attract tourism but who in their right mind wants to visit a "welfare town" where people are hanging out on the streets; drinking; doing drugs. I have never seen so many teenage mothers wheeling their babies around and cursing at their older children. I am digusted; I have made so many calls to child protective services. I hope it changes soon. When they say Location; Location; Location; they are right. The local hospital Bon Secours is bad; I and my family got horrible treatment. They do not even have a local theater; you have to drive 25 miles to the nearest movie theater. Most of the local shops that I am interested in are closed after 5 p.m when people who do have jobs get off. Grant it there are many sitting at home collecting disability checks and welfare checks. This town needs serious help. The few in charge are well-off while a larg percentage in the town are failing big time. The town is full of renters. The crummy landlords buy the houses cheap and rent. Most of the landlords are not local. Its a town full of many renters living in houses. The authorsdo not get into the real nitty-gritty of the Port Jervis of NOW (I suspect they make a decent living and have good social status.). We need better representation; NEW faster trains to NYC; Less BARS; I think we have the most bars per mile in such small town. No wonder there are so many drunks..if you ever need to go to the emergency room you will see all of the drunkards and the mentally ill. One time I was waiting and this poor patient went crazy and this horrible hospital did not have any security or any staff to help control this man. Awful. The police are pretty useless; obviously they use the hospital as their jail. Some appear to be very lazy; it must be easier to drop off the arrested at the hospital than taking them to holding/ their own jail. Must hate the paper work or something. People need to work! Many women in this town need to be educated and have access to birth-control! Where is planned parenthood? The "supposed" Catholic hospital is not going to help. I really want this town to improve so I contact the politicians and voice my ideas and opinions but they just placate and do nothing . Get some other industries in town. Open a college career school/ vocational school for things like Allied Health training etc. Attract some family oriented businesses; not just bars. How about a decent social club for adults; not porn stores! They dont even have a normal hotel in the town that is not full of drug addicts and abusive parents. Look after the children. I can not stand what I see happening to the children of that town. No wonder the ones who graduate move out and do not come back. You need to keep your young educated adults!!!! I just recently moved to a different town but I still care about Port Jervis. I want it to be a thriving town for the residents and tourists not just the few old families who seem to have all of the power (Nepotism; Cronyism)!!!!
