SmithThis is a great book for all residents of Plano and Collin and Dallas Counties; as well as those who have a desire to learn more about this fast growing areas early roots. The book provides a great amount of information on the still-standing historic homes and the families that lived there. One could easily make a walking tour out of those located in downtown Plano (along 15th Street/Norman F. Whitsitt Pkwy; east of US 75/Central Expy) and also a driving tour of the old homesteads scattered throughout the town. Several homes are still owned by descendents of the original pioneers of the area; and most are more than glad to show visitors around.Another chapter of the book highlights buildings that have been demolished or otherwised destroyed. It serves as a great reminder of the importance of historic preservation. For example; compare the castle-like old Plano School to the building that replaced it (now Cox Gymnasium) side-by-side as their pictures appear in the book. It would make anyone sad that the original structure was destroyed. Its also sad that several other homes; such as the old Bishop; Rasor; and Schimelpfenig homesteads have been lost through the years.I cant wait for Ms. McCullochs next book about this interesting city.
