Description

Many years before Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve; the French cinema produced a host of glamorous female stars designed to rival their Hollywood counterparts. Bathed in soft light; discussed adoringly in fan magazines and shown wearing the latest fashions; these lsquo;cinematic starsrsquo; emerged in opposition to Francersquo;s traditional stage-based stardom; while remaining; through the roles they played and the looks they sported; a distinctly French phenomenon. This book examines how these stars influenced the narratives and look of their films; contributed to defining the periodrsquo;s new; emancipated femininity; the lsquo;modern womanrsquo;; and related to the decadersquo;s politics; particularly the anti-facist alliance of the lsquo;Front Populairersquo; during the mid-1930s. It focuses on the three major examples of the periodrsquo;s French screen stardom; Annabella; Danielle Darrieux and Michegrave;le Morgan; while also considering many other key stars; such as Arletty and Viviane Romance; as well as male actors such as Jean Gabin. Key neglected films are considered and true classics of French cinema re-examined; including Reneacute; Clairrsquo;s Quatorze juillet; Julien Duvivierrsquo;s La Bandera and Marcel Carneacute;rsquo;s Le Quai des Brumes.

Simply put: brilliantly performed!By CustomerFor those of us not fluent in German but familiar with CDs of "Faust" in German; especially the 1959 performance of Will Quadflieg as Faust; and the famous performance of Gustaf Gruendgens as Mephistopheles; which is available on DVD (but only in German and only in DVD Region 2 format); this Naxos recording deserves profound applause. Happily; we can now celebrate the great Goethe in a great English performance of his masterpiece. Listening to the "Audible" performance on Kindle is a feast for the devil in all of us. The Naxos "Faust" is quite wonderful: exciting theatre dramatically performed by voices and sound effects that enhance imagination; the performance will more than nudge listeners to seek out and read English translations. It will prompt readers of English translations to seek out recordings in German. Once you understand "Faust" in English; to listen to it in German; whether as an audio book or as a recorded performance; you will feelingly hear some of the magic and beauty of Goethes poetry. Many; many thanks!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Worth the price!By JacobFaust is regarded as one of the best works in German literature; for $11; its worth the price. The only thing that brought it down from a 5 to a 4 is that the book was not in "perfect" condition; although that may have just been from the travel to my doorstep. No major damage; the book just looks like its corners were rubbing against the inside of the package on its way to my home; which made the corners look a little roughened and fuzzy instead of rigid and "pointy"; nothing major; hardly noticeable; and "like new" condition. Great book for a great price; definitely recommend to anyone!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
