Great book; but with problemsBy Tina S;I am always on the lookout for new knitting books especially if they contain patterns or concepts with which I am unfamiliar - not easy as Ive been knitting for 40 years now. This one caught my eye because of the amazing piece on the front cover. Absolutely beautiful!Because it was a library book; I decided to knit swatches of several of the patterns that intrigued me most . . . and thats when the problems started. Some of them contain mistakes; and some are not as clear as they could be especially for beginners. Fortunately I am experienced enough to know how to correct them. (Im inserting a note in the library copy with corrections for anyone else who may check it out and not know what to do with those mistakes. Id give my corrections and clarifications here; but it would take too much space.)Otherwise; its a wonderful book. The publisher understands how important it is for a knitter to have a book that will stay open easily while working on a project. The spiral binding does that perfectly. The color photographs of each stitch provided good contrast so the details were very clear. The instructions on how to read a graph were new to me; and I enjoyed learning how to develop that skill. I was amazed at how useful graphs can be.I have done enough swatches now to know I want my own copy; but Ill have to be sure to write in the corrections when I get it. Meanwhile; I hope the editors will be alerted and do some actual editing to correct those mistakes so they wont have any frustrated knitters on their hands.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Useful Book With Attractive Photos; But Not a "Complete" Knitting ReferenceBy Lynne E.KNITTING: THE COMPLETE GUIDE is a knitting-bag-sized (7" x 8"); spiral-bound; how-to-knit book. Its a nice; useful book; and it includes a lot of attractive small photos; but its far from a "complete" reference book. The book is divided into three main parts. The first part; "The Basics"; talks about yarns (types; fibers; textures; colors); knitting tools; knitting techniques (how to knit; purl; increase; decrease; etc.; illustrated with clear line drawings); pattern abbreviations; embellishment techniques (cables; i-cord; smocking; colorwork; etc.); and knitting charts. The second part; "Stitch Patterns"; consists of a stitch treasury with photos of 216 selected stitch patterns that are accompanied by written-out and charted how-its-done instructions. The stitch patterns range from basic "knit" (garter stitch) to "keyhole cable" to "bobble on sprigs" to "lace leaves" to "beaded stripes and diamonds" to charted colorwork "garden blooms".The third part; "Basic Projects"; provides patterns for simple shawls; scarves; hats; dropped shoulder sweaters; sweaters with classic shaping; gloves; and socks. For me; the small size and small type make the project patterns impractical to use; unless I use a photocopier to enlarge them first. For a basic knitting-bag technical reference; I prefer Vicki Squares index-card-sized book; The Knitters Companion; which has illustrations of more techniques (but no stitch patterns or projects). For a really complete knitting reference; I prefer any of the three classics; Knitters Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to the Principles and Techniques of Handknitting; Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book; or The Principles of Knitting. The stitch treasury is quite nice; but there are many more complete stitch treasuries available; for example The Essential Stitch Collection: Creative Guide to the 300 Stitches Every Knitter Really Needs to Know. Because this is basically just another general how-to book for knitters; I rate it 3 stars ("its okay" on the scale).0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A keeperBy mmdunphyI like Jane Davis; she personalizes what she has written based on her own experiences. She respects the Master Knitters before her. Knitting is a personal thing; there is no true right way; but there are preferences that make it easier to do certain things such as cabling; lace; etc and some ways work better than others; while some ways look better than others the knitters choice. I love the fact Davis incorporates charts and diagrams as well as color tables in her explanations and patterns. Its a pleasure to have "Knitting The Complete Guide" as a reference book in my library.
