Review
2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. History Can Be Our PlanBy J. NevilleA great history and catalogue of PWA projects in Louisiana. Especially relevant given the need for extensive public works infrastructure in post-flood New Orleans/Southeast Louisiana; and the recent focus by the Obama Adminstration for a Green New Deal for the entire country. The book also focuses on the cultural infrastructure built by PWA-- such as schools and libraries-- in addition to basic public works infrastructure like roads; bridges; sewerage treatment plants; and so forth. The book is careful not to romanticize the PWA program and the ways in which projects were recommended; prioritized; and funded. As an urban planner from New Orleans; my main take-away from this book is that the public works program that our region so desperately needs-- both physical (levees; coastal restoration; transit; etc) and cultural (schools; libraries; music centers; public spaces; etc)-- has tangible and inspiring precedents from this period of U.S. and Louisiana history in which governments didnt simply *spend* on infrastructure; they *invested* in it with long-term; strategic investments that have lasted generations.
