[ebooks] 150 Movies You Should Die Before You See by Miller Steve at Arts-Photography

Description

One of the greatest books ever written about a world championship match. In 1960 Mikhail Botvinnik was the pillar of "scientific " chess and the ironwilled champion of the world. The young attacking genius Mihail Tal; the "Wizard of Riga;" put the magic back into the game by defeating Botvinnik with spectacular tactics in one of the most dramatic and celebrated world championship matches of all time. This is Tals own classic work on the contest. In it he sets the stage and explains every one of the 21 games; telling both the on- and off-the-board story of this tatanic clash of styles and thought. Take a trip with the Magician from Riga as he invites you to share his thoughts and feelings as he does battle for the world title."Mikhail Tals splendid account of his world championship match victory is one of the masterpieces of the golden age of annotation before insights and feelings and flashes of genius were reduced to mere moves and Informant symbols. This is simply the best book written about a world championship match by a contestant. That shouldnt be a surprise because Tal was the finest writer to become world champion." From the Foreword by International Grandmaster Andy Soltis

The book itselfBy El JimboI dont write this review based on (my perceived opinion of) the knowledge (or lack thereof) of the authors opinions on whether the movies in this book are really bad. or as some of the reviewers have said. really good. It looks like most of the movies in this book are of the horror genre. and I hadnt seen most of them. Im a sci-fi fan. not a horror fan. but I got the book strictly based on the title alone. I am an avid reader of film books like this. And I DO enjoy really bad movies. There were parts that I enjoyed reading here. and some that I found ridiculous. On the second part of that. I include the section of each review titled "They Really Said It!" There were several entries that I thought the author was stretching it just to find ANYTHING to put in that column. Admittedly some of those may require watching the movie to get the humor the author saw in them. but the good (read: funny) ones of them didnt require that.I also found much of the "Betcha Didnt Know" facts to be more of the Who The Hell Cares variety. Here again. Im not a fan of the genre or a geek from the convention circuit. so some of this stuff may be too esoteric for me. but just right up their alley for the avid fan.Still. all in all. I found the book entertaining. and have added a few movies that Im going to check out just to see if they really are that bad.16 of 19 people found the following review helpful. For ironic hipsters onlyBy T. HeilmanAnyone who knows anything about cult cinema will immediately dismiss this book as utter garbage. They will scratch their heads and wonder why such wonderful films as Deep Red. Suspiria. Re-Animator and From Beyond are doing in a book about bad cinema and why fun drive-in titles like Attack of the Giant Leeches are being picked on.Dissing financial flops like Ishtar and 1941 is hardly creative either.Whenever someone writes a book like this I am compelled to question who it is being written for. The same pinheads who go to Ed Wood screenings to giggle contemptuously and make obnoxious comments to get attention? Miller is the kind of writer who is unable to understand the affection and appreciation these films receive and his textbook response is to heap scorn upon them with poorly thought out arguments. In short. film fans savvy enough to look at this tome before purchasing it will likely think twice. Mr. Miller deserves a place next to Michael Medved in the annals of critical shortsightedness and has insulted this film lover.7 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Just a book full of biased personal opinionBy DesasterI am deeply disappointed.First and most important: It reflects just the authors personal taste. And Im not sure if he actually watched all of these movies. I was hoping for some insightful. maybe even funny reviews of movie disasters. but its nothing but "I dont like this movie. It is stupid. They say stupid things. I dont like this movie." The "reviews" are way to short. not pointing out anything of particular meaning and get dull after like three.Just to make my point:Whoever fails to recognize "Birdemic" as one of the worst movie made to date should not write about "bad" movies.Bad Taste and Plan 9 from outer space both get a trashing in this book.Hello? These are prime examples for "bad" movies you ACTUALLY HAVE TO WATCH. because they will show you that "bad" does not mean "without value".So. instead of paying money for this publication. go to any internet forum and start a thread titled "Worst movie ever". You will most likely get better answers and more entertainment out of it. And if you like movie trivia. imdb has loads of that.
