Book provides great overview of Lightroom inner workings and I think is a must pub for LR users. Saddly; the binding is going to come apart within extremely short amount of time. I have just received my copy and on openning Ican already see the book is coming apart. Real shame on publishers. Just because of this the price should be halved. Im considering Kindle version now; but that is almost same price. At least they should have offered a package deal for paper and kindle combined (like Victoria Bampton does). Otherwise shame; shame shame.18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Valuable Book on Lightroom Workflow Concepts.By Dennis BeckerLightroom was created to allow photographers to import; catalog; edit; and manage large collections of photographs. Unfortunately; for anyone new to Lightroom there is a tendency to jump in and get to the really good stuff by immediately starting to import photos and making adjustments to get the instant gratification of seeing them on prints or on a web site. This can lead to a hodge-podge of photographs that are poorly categorized and becomes increasingly unmanageable as the number of imported photos grows. What I greatly impressed me about Jason Bradlys book on Lightroom is that he stresses the importance of spending the time and effort to set up and configure Lightroom even before getting to the really good stuff. This can be very boring and tedious work but it is essential if one is going to effectively work with a large number of photographs in Lightroom and get the best possible print results. What sets this book apart from other books on Lightroom it that Bradly provides a very logical and organized approach to using Lightroom. He spends roughly the first third of the book addressing the configuration and set up of Lightroom. It includes screen shots of all the setup menus and explanations of all the setup parameters that really need to be done when beginning to use Lightroom. He emphasizes and provides excellent strategies on how and when to back up your digital photographs as well as the importance of setting up a good work environment. This include the importance of having a good monitor and keeping it calibrated. There is an entire chapter on keywording; which is something I have never used but now see can be a very powerful tool to manage and filter my photographs. While other books on Lightroom might cover how to set up and use keywords; Bradley explains why you actually might want to use keywords. From the screen shots in the book; he manages a very large catalog of photographs and; rather than using exotic file and folder naming conventions like I have been using; he uses keywords to identify and locate specific photographs. I have already started using his approach to keywords to help categorize my Lightroom photographs. The book provides excellent strategies on creating collections and collection sets; The remainder of the book is primarily devoted to using the Library; Develop; and Print modules in Lightroom. Since I generally need to do minimal processing on my photographs; these are the only modules I use and are the primary modules that most Lightroom users will use. What should be emphasized is that Bradleys book in devoted to workflow and the concepts on how best to edit on your photographs. As such; the book concentrates more on how to effectively use a tool to improve your photograph as opposed to showing detailed screen shots of the actual tool usage. Details are provided in many instances and I found the examples of setting up and using presets to be very useful. Because; the book provides a very organized approach; I found information that would be lost in most books on Lightroom. For; example I have never seen anything on how to address out of gamut colors to make the best possible print in my other books on Lightroom. I like the fact that this book emphasizes essential and important features of Lightroom as opposed to trying to describe every feature. I also like the fact that Bradly explains when; why; and how to use a feature; whereas many Lightroom books seem to be limited to the how.I would advise anyone who purchases this book to read (at least skim) it cover to cover. The book is less of a reference book since it delves more on the concepts that require reading and understanding. My only real criticism is that the book uses a fairly small font size that makes it difficult to read while I am trying to follow the examples using Lightroom on my computer.I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is just starting with LIghtroom; especially if you expect to manage a very large collection of photographs. I only wish this book had been available when I started using Lightroom. But even for long time users of Lightroom; the book can be an excellent guide on how to use Lighroom to develop and print your photographs. The books real strength is that it concentrates more on the concept of how to best use the Lightroom tools to develop your photographs as opposed to something that buries you in the minutia. I have Scott Kelbys books on Lightroom and I will continue to use them if I need step by step details on how to use a specific feature. But I am finding that Jason Bradleys book far more valuable in showing me how to take advantage of the power and features of Lightroom to manage and edit on my photographs in a very methodical and organized way. It represents a very fresh and very valuable addition to all the books on Lightroom that are currently in print.6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A guide to get you started on starts on a journyBy Mark DiekhansLightroom changed me as a photographer. Just as Ansel used the darkroom to transform a frame to a great image; Lightroom fills this niche for digital photographer.Lightroom can be a daunting program at first and even once one climbs the initial hill; there are still lots to learn. Its a journey well worth taking and Bradleys book is an extraordinary guide. Having taking a class from Jason; I was excited to see his Lightroom wisdom captured in print. This book is neither a reference manual or another boring; repetitive `how-to book. This book takes you through a journey into Lightroom as a travel guide takes you into a new country. Its follows a path you will arrive at a place to when you can create great art and manage your work without being overwhelmed.
