This book examines how Beefhearts incomparable opus; an album that divided (rather than) united a pop audience; is informed by a variety of diverse sources. Trout Mask Replica is a hybrid of poetic declarations inspired by both Walt Whitman and the beat poets; the field hollers of the Delta Blues; the urban blues of Howlin Wolf; the gospel blues of Blind Willie Johnson; and the free jazz of Ornette Coleman. This book illustrates how Trout Mask Replica was not so much an arcane specimen of the avant-garde; but rather a defiantly original declaration of the American imagination.

I am so grateful!By CALDONIA NYFilled with incredible stories of mys family history that has long been lost to time on purpose! It was great reading about how the families on the bloody east coast werebdling family conflicts. Seems like only the stories about the mid west and wild west seemed to survive! I really enjoyed reading all the articles on what was going on a hundred years ago and seems like not much has really changed in human nature. People are still just people with same family and social strift and resolve them poorly when feeling stressed; angry; overwhelmed and without hope to they turn to violence over and over again. WheelerI bought this for a couple of reasons; first; I was researching information to do with a book Im writing; and there was information contained that was useful; and secondly because I was born and raised in that county. As I live in England; it is not viable to revisit and research material and people from such a distance; and this was very helpful. Apart from that; if you like crime and justice topics; it makes good lightweight reading. DefilippoWhile the author did extensive research in combing through court records; Chapter 11- on my aunt Rosina Stobles murder and my grandmother Christina Stobles trial - ends with a baseless speculation by the author. He can not understand how a woman (my grandmother; Christina Stoble) could murder her own daughter for having a baby out of wedlock. He makes a baseless leap to the conclusion that my aunt was impregnated by her father (my grandfather; Michael Stoble); which caused shame for the family and resulted in murder by my grandmother.This is pure conjecture; which is also hurtful to the surviving members of a family who have already endured much heartache over this tragedy. My mother was five years old when this occurred. She and her two sisters Millie and Anna were placed in a foster home while their mother was in prison. The entire family carried this shame throughout their days in one form or another.Some of the Italian-Americans in the Red Bank/Long Branch area thought my mothers family was cursed by this horrible blood crime. My mother never spoke of it; but after her death one of my aunts told me that this murder was in fact committed by my grandmothers brother; who may have been connected to a local mob outfit. Because of his criminal affiliation; my grandmother took the rap so he did not have to go to jail. After reading this book I think my grandmother still took the rap for a male family member; but I believe the actual murderer was more likely my grandfather or possibly one of my uncles.The author does not understand Old World Italian immigrants. The father held the power of life and death over his wife and children. The concept of "paterfamilia" is older than ancient Rome. That would be more likely for the murder of this innocent 16 year old girl while giving birth. This does not make it right; but it takes away the sting of another accusation unjustly raised by an otherwise credible author.I hope that if the author ever publishes a second edition of this book he removes the hurtful and unfounded speculation of incest from his concluding paragraph. If he has a source that implicates my grandfather as an incestuous parent; he is obligated to include it with his research. Otherwise; remove the offending material.
