[audiobook] A Brief History of Mount Dora; Florida by Gary McKechnie; Nancy Howell in Arts-Photography

Description

CrabtreeMs. Hamlin has been visiting Guantanamo Bay since 2006; documenting the most unique detention center ever created. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks it was necessary to hold certain enemy combatants from the Global War on Terror but to hold them where the intelligence value of what they knew would not be compromised by legal niceties; niceties which the detainees did not believe in (and even hated) but which liberal lawyers would use to the advantage of their clients. As a result; Joint Task Force Guantanamo was established in a small corner of Cuba leased by the United States. Not part of the United States; it is nevertheless under U.S. control.Detainees have been processed for justice via military tribunal; a practice recognized in U.S. jurisprudence. The courtroom proceedings of these tribunals are held cannot be photographed or videoed for security reasons. This makes Hamlins job absolutely vital. She produces sketches of the proceedings; much as is done in some civil trials. There are many advantages to this process; as some details which might violate security could be easily eliminated and artistic license could be used to convey the full impact of the moment. Many of her sketches are reproduced here and the "backstory" provided. Ms. Hamlin had to have much patience at times; putting up with courts which did not always accommodate her needs; security within Camp Justice; long hours and inconsistencies of military rules and procedures. Despite all this she is an excellent artist and her body of work from Guantanamo provides an important; not to mention unique; record of this chapter in American history.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Remarkable BookBy Stephen B. MumfordThese drawings go way beyond conventional courtroom sketching and into the depths of our nations soul and the war on terror. Its really fascinating to see the intimate details of these scenes; sometimes fraught; sometimes banal; always relatable. The drawings are accompanied by the stories of the defendants and sometimes the family members of victims of various attacks; which refresh ones memory over the long drawn-out history of 9/11 and our subsequent wars. There are also some beautiful drawings of the landscapes of Gitmo; that flesh out this weird piece of US real estate on the island of Cuba.A great achievement that readers will linger over.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Breathtaking. This sketch/essay book is critical; not only ...By Katey SchultzBreathtaking. This sketch/essay book is critical; not only for the voice and eye that it brings to top security courtroom hearings but to the attention it gives to neutrality; conflict; capitalism; and the theatre of war. Ive thumbed through these pages until theyve worn thin. An essential book and phenomenal for classrooms; the curious; and the watchful.
