The last daughter born to Jotham Bixby; the "Father of Long Beach;" Fanny Bixby Spencer (1879-1930) carved her own singular and eccentric path across California history. Born to wealth and power; she chose a boldly independent; egalitarian lifestyle in an age when womens lives were largely confined to domesticity. Fanny served with the Long Beach Police Department as Americas first policewoman. She was a founder of the city of Costa Mesa in Orange County. Her humanitarian efforts reached across ethnicities and social standing. Yet beyond her civic accomplishments; Fanny was provocative as a poet; artist; pacifist; suffragist; child advocate; foster mother and humanitarian. Marcia Lee Harris captures this fascinating womans remarkable life; enhanced by Fannys own poetry and soulful reflections.

Who Did Shakespeare Know and Love?By Peter JensenMy Shakespeare students and I used both of Kate Pogues books--"Shakespeares Family" and "Shakespeares Friends"--to do what I call "cutout" biography. We took all of Pogues very well written; short biographies of famous and not so famous people and drew our lines from their lives as close to William Shakespeare as we could get. Soon; the outline of Shakespeares body; which starts out looking like a crime scene chalk outline around a victim--starts to get defined as a real person. Using Pogues two books about at least one hundred people who knew him will help you realize that it took a whole culture to create a Shakespeare. Soon; you will have a walking and talking hologram of Will Shakespeare the man based on those who loved him and who worked with him. You will discover people who Will took as models for his many wonderful characters. You will discover people who he loved and addressed in his Sonnets and poems. Pogue recreates Shakespeares community.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Shakespears FamilyBy Thomas M RogersKate Erery Pogue has done it again!!
