It is also an interesting account of the Italian front and the two years that it took to push the Germans out of Italy. For anyone familiar with Italy and its art; it is intriguing ti understand how close the world came to losing it. And it is a real tribute to the Americans and the British who understood how precious a heritage it is and how important it was to preserve it. Subsequent armies have not devoted time and expense and energy to preserving the treasures of other invaded countries. Definitely worth reading.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A riveting tale of the salvation of Italys masterpieces in World War II.By lynn nicholasIn this finely written and researched first book; full of anecdotes that will fascinate all art lovers; Ilaria Dagnini Brey adds wonderful insight and detail to the gripping story of the miraculous preservation of many of the worlds most treasured masterpieces during the German occupation of Italy and the allied campaign to liberate it. The heroes are the curators of Italys patrimony and the fabled monuments men attached to the Allied invasion forces; and Ms. Brey does them proud.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Amazing story of saving art during wartimeBy JMCI did not realize how close we came to losing so many works of great art during WWII; and that a group of officers had been designated to save and restore these priceless works of art; buildings; bridges; churches; etc. It also shows how people can work together to save the local culture and history just for the sake of preserving the culture without expecting anything in return. This is a story that has been quiet for too long.
