Arlo Guthrie; the son of Americarsquo;s legendary dust bowl troubadour Woody Guthrie and Martha Graham dancer Marjorie Mazia Guthrie; was reared in the rarefied atmosphere of New York Cityrsquo;s remnant Old Left culture; a period that brought together art; political action; and folk music. Music was part of Guthriersquo;s life from the very beginning and his self-confessed earliest childhood memory was standing knee-high next to Lead Belly; the blues legend and ldquo;King of the twelve-string Guitar.rdquo; Arlos earliest mentors were his fatherrsquo;s friends; and the youngster would learn his craft from the giants of American folk music: Pete Seeger; the Weavers; Cisco Houston; Josh White; Oscar Brand; Ramblinrsquo; Jack Elliott; Brownie McGhee; and Sonny Terry.Arlo Guthrie: The Warner/Reprise Years revisits Guthriersquo;s fifteen-year ride as a recording artist for the prestigious record label. Hank Reineke guides readers through the colorful history of Guthriersquo;s most creative period; when the droll; shaggy-haired troubadour promised in song that a ldquo;new world" was surely coming. In his thoughtful consideration of Guthries career as a popular; if idiosyncratic; recording artist for the Reprise/Warner Bros. label; Reineke regales readers with stories behind the remarkable success of Guthriersquo;s talking blues-turned-movie Alicersquo;s Restaurant and his celebrated appearance at the 1969 Woodstock festival. Guthriersquo;s time at Reprise/Warner Bros. from 1967 to 1982 saw twelve critically acclaimed solo albums; two staple singles of FM radio (ldquo;Coming Into Los Angelesrdquo; and ldquo;City of New Orleansrdquo;); and a pair of treasured folk-music recording collaborations with Pete Seeger. With a look at Guthriersquo;s life and times before and after this prolific period of his career; Arlo Guthrie: The Warner/Reprise Years is the first biography dedicated solely to this gifted artist. A goldmine of information on the Guthrie familys legacy to American music; the counterculture of the 1960s; and the record industry of the 1970s; this work also features a detailed bibliography as well as the first comprehensive discography of Guthriersquo;s recordings through the present day. Arlo Guthrie: The Warner/Reprise Years will appeal to popular music historians; folk-rock fans; and readers interested in the American counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s.

This book is too simple for anyone who has spent any time--even if it was years ago--playing the piano. Many of the songs have just a single note melody line and there are very few chords included. Have been able to improve with chords I remember. The book would be great for first-year piano students and has great illustrations that kids would like to color. I. however. am almost 60. Bought two other books--one for Complete Levels 2 3 that I am able to play fairly well (Alfreds Basic Piano Library Christmas Book) and one with more challenging arrangements that I wouldnt necessarily call east (Hal Leonard Ultimate Christmas) that I am finding most satisfactory.A First Book of Christmas Songs: 20 Favorite Songs in Easy Piano Arrangements (Dover Music for Piano)Alfreds Basic Piano Library: Christmas Book Complete Levels 2 3 (Top Hits! HaughtonHere are the 20 songs in the book: Angels We Have Heard on High; Jingle Bells; Away in a Manger; Joy to the World; Silent Night; Deck the Halls; O. Come All Ye Faithful; Song of the Birds; The Coventry Carol; O Come. O Come. Emmanuel; We Three Kings of Orient Are; The First Nowell; O Little Town of Bethlehem; What Child is This?; Hark! The Herald Angels Sing; O Christmas Tree; We Wish You a Merry Christmas; God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen; Pat-a-pan; Shepherds. O Shepherds. There are illustrations throughout the book for children to color. and all-in-all its not bad for the price. I do wish. however. that all the verses of the songs could have been included (only the first verse is given) so that you wouldnt have to buy a Christmas songbook separately or hunt down verses on the Internet.8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Not a beginner bookBy SarahI was really excited about this book b/c I got it free with s 4-for-3 deal. I was looking for a Christmas book to use with my beginning piano students. While this book is very simply arranged. many of the songs are not in the key of C Major. Several of them are in the key of F or G. even D! Some of the songs also have eighth notes. This is not beginning level! None of my beginners could play from the book. I didnt even get to use it for them this year. I recommend Alfreds Basic Piano Christmas books. Level 1 and Level 2Alfreds Basic Piano Course: Merry Christmas! (Alfreds Basic Piano Library) Level 2 seem to be graded much more appropriately.
