The history of Highland began on the shores of the Hudson River in 1754; when entrepreneur Anthony Yelverton started a sawmill; later followed by a brickyard; store; and ferry service to Poughkeepsie. During the 19th century; steamboats made regular stops near Yelvertonrsquo;s settlement. Starting around 1830; riverfront businesses began to relocate to the ldquo;high landrdquo; above the river; and a new Highland business district was born. The West Shore Railroad was completed in 1883; with a station at the riverfront. The area was called Highland Landing. The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge; now the Walkway Over the Hudson; was completed in 1888; and in 1897; a trolley line began operation from Highland Landing up to the Highland village and; from there; westward. Highland had a new claim to fame as the ldquo;Gateway to Ulster County.rdquo;

Its 140 pages; but the first waterfall from the western side of the state comes on page 119. Ive been able to locate several falls using internet sources that are not covered in this book.The coverage of the falls that are in the book includes directions; an occasional photo; and a fairly detailed description of the featured fall.The directions and details make the book worth a look. Im just disappointed by the lack of coverage of the falls on the western side of the state.Update: I sounded a little critical in my original review; and I apologize to the author for that. The book IS in fact a great exploration of the waterfalls in Pennsylvania: great descriptions of the falls; very thorough directions; photography advice and a description of the technique the author used. Some very handy informaiton.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great collection of scenic hikes for adventure-planningBy S. IrelandBought this for my husband for Christmas because because I thought it would be fun to plan some day trips. Most enjoyable so far has been Ricketts Glen. Cant wait to explore more of the waterfall hikes!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Where is Freedom Falls?By UserFreedom Falls on Shull Run is inexplicably omitted from this otherwise excellent book. The author is very wise in the ways of photographing water falls.[ It seems counterintuitive; but you shoot the best pics when its cloudy.] But he left out the aforesaid Freedom Falls by the old Freedom Iron Furnace in Venango County near Rockland Tunnel on the Rails-to-Trails. Thats my favorite falls. And its right by the Allegheny River. But numerous other falls and cascades from the Keystone State are located and most of them are illustrated.
