Deep ReadBy Bucket ManyweatherSomewhere between the finality of the complete consumption of this text; the weight of the history; and my own intentions along with the texts; I couldnt help but to read looking for answers. I found many; yet forgot the meanings behind my inquiries in the first place; this dissonance was both motivating and numbing.When I picked this book up for the second time; months after I put it down; it became clear that my subconscious was stalling me until I was ready to give this text the attention it deserves.The book is half historic richness; half description of Coltrane Church praxis through the years; the author makes sure to capture it all. There are so many discussions the author illustrates from belief to politics; its difficult to know where to begin. So much of the Coltrane Consciousness is about intention; and a sincerity of righteousness; which is so beautiful to read about in this time of uncertainty; although current times resemble many pressure points of the past.The critical social-justice connections that the Coltrane Church has always made; in music and in truth; is something that desperately needs to be adopted by all Black Movements; People; and Churches. I couldnt help but to view the church as resisting within and through the Black community towards a Black liberation. It becomes apparent that a lot of the catchings the church has faced is a direct product of the evil and oppressions that came with our colonization. The bittersweet experiences from the initial sound baptism to the womanist theological expansion and beyond further validates the means of resistance through a Coltrane Consciousness. Like digging in dirt and hitting concrete; then digging around the concrete to reveal the outermost parameter of the very thing that has been ruining the soil; there is a distinct kind of inspiration in each stage of the nonlinear evolution of Coltrane Church ideologies.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. At times I felt like putting this book down and never returning to it. Im glad I stayed with it. For those with ears to hear and eyes to see this could be a real blessing.
