It is much more than a text on the evolution of dance and humanism; it is a reflection on aspects of contemporary dance also. It deserves the 4 star rating (or even 5 stars) because of its presentation and relevance and even if early dance is not to your liking; it is worth reading to gain a better understanding of the sensibilities that cultivated such dancing and why essential qualities in dance are universal. This book is for both the serious student and teacher of dance or the casual enthusiast. For choreographers; there is a wealth of inspiration to be found in the many stories that Nevile includes to illustrate a point as well as descriptions of some of the devises used by the choreographers of the time. Neviles attention to knowledge from original documents makes this book a valuable addition to any dance historians library and invites a fresh look at some of the accepted practices of today.
