Adolphe Appia: Texts on Theatre

[ePub] Adolphe Appia: Texts on Theatre by Richard C. Beacham at Arts-Photography

Description

Peter Weir: Interviews is the first volume of interviews to be published on the esteemed Australian director. Although Weir (b. 1944) has acquired a reputation of being guarded about his life and work; these interviews by archivists; journalists; historians; and colleagues reveal him to be a most amiable and forthcoming subject. He talks about "the precious desperation of the art; the madness; the willingness to experiment" in all his films; the adaptation process from novel to film; when he tells a scriptwriter; "Im going to eat your script; its going to be part of my blood!"; and his self-assessment as "merely a jester; with cap and bells; going from court to court." He is encouraged; even provoked to tell his own story; from his childhood in a Sydney suburb in the 1950s; to his apprenticeship in the Australian television industry in the 1960s; his preparations to shoot his first features in the early 1970s; his international celebrity in Australia and Hollywood. An extensive new interview details his current plans for a new film.Interviews discuss Weirs diverse and impressive range of work--his earlier films Picnic at Hanging Rock; The Last Wave; Gallipoli; and The Year of Living Dangerously; as well as Academy Award-nominated Witness; Dead Poets Society; Green Card; The Truman Show; and Master and Commander. This book confirms that the trajectory of Weirs life and work parallels and embodies Australias own quest to define and express a historical and cultural identity.

His usual wont sit still for a story self was literally glued to his seat and listening intently (which if I were reviewing as hBy AppleGurl702Okay so I have decided to go about my review a littler differently than I usually do. I am going to allow my child to give me their feedback and base the majority of my review on that since lets face it this book is intended to be reviewed by the actual reader not by a 30 something mother of 2. lol! So with that said I read this book to my 6 year old son and he seemed to just gobble it up. His usual wont sit still for a story self was literally glued to his seat and listening intently (which if I were reviewing as his mom would be a HUGE plus) he had many MANY follow up questions for each question and their subsequent answers from the book (which if i were reviewing as his mom would kind of annoy me since I then in turn had to spend several minutes answering the questions with content not available in the book) He remained very curious and engaged from start to finish of the book (almost an hour and a half due to me having to have dialogue with him and answer all of his other questions) I asked him at the end of the book what his thoughts of the book were and to quote him he said " I loved it! can we read it again!" so obviously he loved the book and as such I would say it was a hit for the intended reader. Now here is where I will give my mom feedback. I found that the books intended audience is perfect only as long as an adult is available to answer the slew of follow up questions from the book. That is not necessarily a negative. I think this book offers an opportunity for the mother/Child to actively engage in dialogue and ends in relationship building. based on that fact I give a solid 4 stars and would purchase this book as well as the others by this same author; I would just do so with the knowledge that its an active Q A style book; and gets their brains working so for sure not a bed time story type book. I did receive this book for free in exchange for my honest feedback. My opinions are never swayed based on promotional pricing as an online shopper personally I review heavily on reviews when making my purchases.I hope my reviews are helpful for you in your shopping experience. If they are please check the helpful button so I know how they are being received and can take that feedback in mind when reviewing more items so I can better serve you all as well.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Lots of great factsBy Keith NicholsonI read this book to my 4 year old and she thought it was so cool to hear about why we do things we do. This book answers a wide variety of questions like Why do I burp? Why do my feet get wrinkly in the water? Why does my nose run? Why do I cough? Why does my body need sleep and there are so many more questions that are answered in the book as well. My daughters favorite part of the book was when they talked about the belly button. She has been very fascinated with her belly button lately and thought it was cool that her belly button was once connected to a cord.I received this product at a discounted price or free for offering my honest opinion. I was in no way compensated for this review nor am I required to write a positive review. These words are based on my personal experience with the product.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Its... Okay.By Tiffany HolleyWell; lets start with the positive: this is the best of the three books in this series that we have read! Yay!Substantial points off for choosing the word "fart"; which is crass; and not a term we use in this house; meaning that while I am willing to review the rest of the book for others edification; MY children will not be reading it.Each page spread of the book poses a question; such as; "Why Do I Shiver;" "Why Does My Nose Run;" "Why Do I Have a Belly Button;" or "Why does my body jerk before I fall asleep". There is a photo or illustration of the bodily feature or function in question; then a small text blurb of explanation.Unfortunately; the level of information given; and the reading level at which it is presented; seems wildly inconsistent; making it tough to know what age group might be best served by this book.To have on your phone and kill time in the waiting room at the doctors office; this is a cute little product; and; clearly; the price for the Kindle version is right. I cant see spending the money for a print version (or the Kindle version; if the price increases).I am obligated to add the disclaimer that "I received this product free in exchange for agreeing to provide a review" which is pretty silly; given that it is already free for everyone. Obviously; it does not compel me to write a falsely positive review.
