This book presents a selection of the best papers from the HEaRT 2013 conference; held in Cosenza; Italy; which provided a valuable forum for engineers and architects; researchers and educators to exchange views and findings concerning the technological history; construction features and seismic behavior of historical timber-framed walls in the Mediterranean countries. The topics covered are wide ranging and include historical aspects and examples of the use of timber-framed construction systems in response to earthquakes; such as the gaiola system in Portugal and the Bourbon system in southern Italy; interpretation of the response of timber-framed walls to seismic actions based on calculations and experimental tests; assessment of the effectiveness of repair and strengthening techniques; e.g.; using aramid fiber wires or sheets; and modelling analyses. In addition; on the basis of case studies; a methodology is presented that is applicable to diagnosis; strengthening and improvement of seismic performance and is compatible with modern theoretical principles and conservation criteria. It is hoped that; by contributing to the knowledge of this construction technique; the book will help to promote conservation of this important component of Europe’s architectural heritage.

Much more in-depth than I anticipated but it is constructed in such a way that you can jump around and read topics that you are interested in rather than have to muddle through topics about which you dont have a current interest. Not Just for Dummies !By CJJimThis book makes a difficult program a little easier. Most newer cameras and smartphones take excellent photos so little editing is usually required. But; if you need to edit; then Photoshop Elements 11 is a good cost effective program. I am a very experienced in digital photo and video editing and went to the Elements 11 to simplify my work. However; Photoshop Elements 11 IS NOT intuitive; so this Dummies volume is a necessity to get any proficiency out of the program. I used Photoshop for years then Photo Impact (PI) for many more. PI is much more user friendly; but very unstable with Vista and Win 7/8. Get this book and use it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I was finding it almost impossible to get the most out of the program before I purchased this book. The book explained how to easily organize my vast collection of family photos; edit lighting and contrast; crop; remove red-eye and scratches and blemishes from photos.I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to go beyond the basics of photo organization and editing using Photoshop Elements 11. It is also very useful with Photoshop Elements 12.
