You will be overwhelmed by all of the names; dates; and places which might be annoying if you arent from St. Louis. However; if you grew up in the greater St. Louis area you will certainly recognize many of the street names as well as some of the small towns -- some as much as 50 miles away. The writing style made it easy for me to picture what was happening but maybe some of that might be from watching TV shows like The Untouchable as a child. A couple of things that didnt really surprise me but things the author pointed out that reinforced some of my beliefs: the strong ties the mobsters had to the democrat party and the complete infiltration of the labor unions. Overall I was really glad I took the time to read this book.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful detail - the story of my family!By RRussoI was absolutely shocked and excited when I stumbled upon this book. My family has shared bits and pieces of stories of their time in St. Louis; but this book really put it all together. The Russo side of the family moved from St. Louis to Ft. Worth in the late 1920s and my grandmother was the sister of the Russo Brothers in the book. This book is a perfect mixture of details; personalities and overall pressures that the illegal selling of whiskey placed on families. It also explains many of our family stories. Its quite an accomplishment that the Author could write such an exciting story and its all true! Thanks for such a great book!!4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Interesting bookBy chrisIt was interesting to see what life was like when my parents were young. Its also interesting to see the names of the gangsters and know many people with the same names. Even my grandfather was mentioned; but unfortunately; he was a victim of one of the gangs.
