Alameda (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing))

[audiobook] Alameda (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) by Greta Dutcher; Stephen Rowland at Arts-Photography

Description

In the early 1830s; a man named Elisha Newman made the first land claim in the area that later became Portland; Michigan. Newman was attracted by the excellent location at the confluence of the Grand and Looking Glass Rivers. He was not the first to be drawn to this area; as it had already been occupied for many years by the Chippewa and Ottawa tribes of Native Americans. After its 1836 settlement by European Americans; Portland steadily grew into an economic and industrial center of Ionia County. In 1869; Portland was incorporated as a village. This book contains nearly 200 photographs and illustrations that both document and celebrate life in the Portland area from 1869 through the years just prior to World War II; a time when the banks of the Grand and Looking Glass Rivers were teeming with industry and the downtown streets were bustling with activity.

Also the jobs they had such as a neighbor of ours on Versailles Ave. who was a frogman on the building of the bay bridge. Edwin Siegfried an artist who was the only artist to have his own room to display his work at the Panama Pacific International Expo?/San Francisco Worlds Fair? ?George Whittell a shipping owner who built a home on Caroline Street which became a ghost house and was in the process of being torn down when a local auto Buick dealer...Richard Chaplin purchased it. Oles. So many more tales. Another volume perhaps??1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. GD BOOK!By Brad A. A must for any San Francisco Bay Area library and any cataloging California regional historyBy Midwest Book ReviewUnique among publishers of American history materials is Arcadia Publishings Postcard History series which photomechanically reproduces postcards of local American communities and through them provides a kind of visual history of that village. town or city. Such is the case with "Alameda" in which co-authors Greta Dutcher (a vintage post card collector) and Stephen Rowland celebrate the history of Alameda. California. This is a community that was a major waterfront shipping port. evolved into a resort destination. was home to major military stations. and experienced the kind of growth and evolution common to many other California communities throughout the 20th century. Each black-and-white postcard image is captioned. providing the reading with background information identifying and placing into context the image displayed. "Alameda" is very highly recommended for vintage post card enthusiasts in general. and anyone with an interest in the history of Alameda in particular. Vintage post card collectors and students of regional American history would be well advised to visit the Arcadia Publishing website at [...] for a complete title listing of their extensive Postcard History series.
