In Susie Kalils groundbreaking book. she re-examines Hogues work with a fresh perspective and presents a new. rarely seen Hogue. Instead of only emphasizing Hogues dust bowl work. Kalil devotes equal time to Hogues other endeavors and showcases art from throughout his long-lived career. His earliest works. his Taos works. his under-appreciated abstracts and his last monumental landscapes of Big Bend. Texas receive beautiful full-page color reproductions that document his artistic journey and development.Through countless interviews with Hogue. Kalil garnered insight into Hogues life and art philosophies and was better able to understand Hogue both as a man and an artist. Her extensive use of Hogues quotes allow the reader to enter Hogues mind and better appreciate his creative process. While many of Hogues iconic images will be familiar. others will surprise and elicit new emotions. Alexandre Hogue an American Visionary shows Hogues artistic diversity and releases him from the constraining labels of "dust bowl artist" or "regionalist painter." This book is clearly a testament to Kalils determination to re-invigorate Alexanre Hogues status as a great artist. It is a must buy for any connoisseur of American art.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
