Passionate; highly entertaining and gloriously funny - Robert Tressells classic pre-First World War account of the working lives of a group of housepainters and decorators is vividly adapted by Howard Brenton. The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists recounts the little daily successes and the disasters of a group of working-class men; living under the constant fear of being laid off by employers forever looking for new corners to cut. Both workers and bosses are caught in a system spiralling out of control; but why is it the workers always come out worse? Howard Brentons stage adaptation lays bare the many social injustices perpetrated on these men whilst capturing their individual characters with touching truth to life. Speaks with passion and eloquence - Guardian Sparkles with so much wit and integrity it is impossible not to warm to the ethos that lies at its very core. - Stage Wisely; Howard Brenton has shown confidence in Tressells original story and has concentrated on creating a piece of theatre without compromising the impact of the original text...Brenton has produced the definitive stage version. - Amateur Stage

Having grown up in Floodwood; Minnesota; 35 miles from Hibbing where Dylan grew up and attending the University of Minnesota at the same time as Dylan; I never listened to much of his music. I read this book while listening to his music and have gained an appreciation for his talent as a poet and singer.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. None BetterBy aforelifeOne would expect a lifelong Dylan fan to be far too invested to compose an objective account; but; surprisingly; Daniel Mark Epstein; seasoned poet-biographer; pulls it off. Epsteins raw; organic delivery and sumptuous; sensory detail elucidates and complicates...a delicious combination. This reviewer followed Epsteins lead and took in her first Dylan concert recently and found him to be every bit as captivating as the author claims--even more so--at the tender age of seventy-two. Epstein is the quintessential Dylan biographer.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great bookBy DianneFantastic book giving insight into Bob Dylan and his life.
