Liszts B minor Sonata is now regarded as his finest work for piano; and one of the pinnacles of Romantic piano music. This handbook opens with a survey of Liszts early attempts at sonata composition - which include some well-known pieces that; hitherto; have been unrecognised as sonata forms - and clears away some of the persistent myths regarding programme music in Liszts output. In the central chapters; built around an analysis of the B minor Sonata; Kenneth Hamilton discusses various interpretative approaches; arguing that the contradictory writings on the subject stem from the deliberate formal ambiguity of the piece itself - one reason for its perennial fascination; perhaps. The book concludes with a chapter on the performance practice and the performing history of the work; which should be of particular interest to pianists.

Decent book; but not in good conditionBy DLThis book contains a pretty good overview of world music in both musical and cultural contexts. My only complaint about the content of the book is that if you dont have time to read an entire chapter; you will not be able to use the summary at the end of the chapter to get a basic understanding of it. The summaries are minimal. My biggest complaint is about the condition of the book. I bought it used from a third party seller who listed it in good condition when it clearly was not. In addition to excessive highlighting throughout the book; it appears as though a child got ahold of the highlighter and did extensive work himself.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
