Mrenh Gongveal: Chasing the Elves of the Khmer is an photo essay that delves into a common; but lesser understood; belief of the Cambodians. While learning about the culture and customs of Cambodia; Keith Kellys adopted home of 10 years; he was especially fascinated by their folklore. One particular type of shrine dedicated to the Mrenh Gongveal; Elves of the Khmer; caught his imagination. As a personal project he started documenting the more interesting "houses" he came across during his travels. While talking to people; most could give little explanation for the houses other than they "brought luck." Wanting to know more lead the author upon a 5 year journey collecting photos and information; which is presented in this book.

The review below is intended to be for Stories ONLY~~~~~~~~~~~While Brandons first release was an excellent book of photography; it lacked many of the stories behind the individuals. I came to find HONY on facebook and feel the story behind the photo is half the experience. With his newest release; it all comes together to give you the full HONY package that most people have come to know and love. This book is a bargain for all the passion and work that Brandon puts into this project.If you are deciding on whether or not to buy the book; consider the following; which Brandon posted on the HONY facebook page: "I want to take a quick opportunity to remind everyone that HONY is advertisement free and almost entirely financed by book sales. (The only exception being income from a handful of speeches I give every year.) Proceeds from books have been used to pay for trips to twenty different countries over the past year alone. Ive purchased all three Humans of New York books and have loved them all; but in Humans of New York - Stories; it all comes together. The photography is expressive; and the stories are equal parts soul-crushing and uplifting. The masterful way that Brandon interviews his subjects really shines through. Ive followed Humans of New York for 4 years and am just in awe of its revolutionary transformation and its power to do good in this world. Even something went unspeakably wrong and against all odds the book was garbage (it isnt) you STILL should buy it; if for nothing more than to cast a vote of support for the JOY; LOVE; and EMPATHY that HONY provides. This is a voice of hope and kindness in a world that can occasionally strip you of both. Even better than the first!By Fred ForbesIm a serious photographer so my interest was aroused by the Facebook postings which caused me to "read" the first in the series; "Humans of New York". Light on the stories (enough to pique ones interest in the character in the shot but not much else); but the pictures were great. Well composed; great at catching expressions - not easy to do when dealing with total strangers! This book takes the stories a bit further and the pix/story combinations are by turns; inspiring; engaging; some even depressing; but all so human. "Today in micro fashion..." shots of the kids showing off their outfits are always a treat. Grab a copy and enjoy!
