The illustrated history of one of Michigans oldest citiesBy ealovittArcadia Press; the publisher of ldquo;St. Ignacerdquo; specializes in historical photo-essay books on American locations or events that might otherwise be neglected or forgotten. Some of its 4;000 titles include ldquo;Chicagorsquo;s State Street Christmas Parade;rdquo; ldquo;Aviators in Early Hollywood;rdquo; and ldquo; The 1938 Hurricane along New Englandrsquo;s Coast.rdquo;ldquo;St. Ignacerdquo; can be read with pleasure by those who are interested in Michigan history; most especially by those of us who have crossed the Mackinac Bridge from the Lower to the Upper Peninsula and have wondered about the origins of this small town on the north side of the bridge. It is one of the oldest cities in Michigan and was originally a Native American settlement called Michilimackinac; renamed in 1671 when Fr. Jacques Marquette and the Jesuits arrived to set up a mission. The drawings; paintings; and photographs in this book were gathered by a committee from the St. Ignace Public Library; who also wrote the accompanying text. The book is divided into five sections: "Early St. Ignace" which deals with the life and times of Pere Marquette; the Hurons; and the French coureurs du bois; the decline of the fur trade and the growth of the fishing and lumbering industries; "The Boom Times" - post Civil War through the early 20th Century; "Tourists Come to the Gateway City" - tourism before the construction of the Mackinac Bridge; including photographs of the ferries that plied between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas; "The Town and the Townspeople" - a photographic history of the various residents and special visitors; including President Theodore Roosevelt; and "After the Bridge" - photographs during and after the construction of Mighty Mac; which opened on November 1; 1957.According to the text on the back cover of this book; "The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods; towns; and cities across the country. Using archival photographs; each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today." I think they did a fine job with this historical Michigan city.
