[audiobook] An Actress Prepares: Women and quot;the Methodquot; by Rosemary Malague in Arts-Photography

Description

[Fire in the Belly is] unimprovable as a biography-thorough; measured; beautifully written; loving but not uncritical-as a concentrated history of his times; and as a memorial.rdquo; -Luc Sante; BookforumDavid Wojnarowicz was an abused child; a teen runaway who barely finished high school; but he emerged as one of the most important voices of his generation. He found his tribe in New Yorks East Village; a neighborhood noted in the 1970s and 80s for drugs; blight; and a burgeoning art scene. His creativity spilled out in paintings; photographs; films; texts; installations; and in his life and its recounting-creating a sort of mythos around himself. His circle of East Village artists moved into the national spotlight just as the AIDS plague began its devastating advance; and as right-wing culture warriors reared their heads. As Wojnarowiczs reputation as an artist grew; so did his reputation as an agitator-because he dealt so openly with his homosexuality; so angrily with his circumstances as a Person With AIDS; and so fiercely with his would-be censors.Fire in the Belly is the untold story of a polarizing figure at a pivotal moment in American culture-and one of the most highly acclaimed biographies of the year. In this rapidly globalizing world; any investigation of architecture inevitably leads to considerations of regionalism. But despite its omnipresence in contemporary practice and theory; architectural regionalism remains a fluid concept; its historical development and current influence largely undocumented. This comprehensive reader brings together over 40 key essays illustrating the full range of ideas embodied by the term. Authored by important critics; historians; and architects such as Kenneth Frampton; Lewis Mumford; Sigfried Giedion; and Alan Colquhoun; Architectural Regionalism represents the history of regionalist thinking in architecture from the early twentieth century to today. In The Landscape Urbanism Reader Charles Waldheimmdash;who is at the forefront of this new movementmdash;has assembled the definitive collection of essays by many of the fields top practitioners. Fourteen essays written by leading figures across a range of disciplines and from around the worldmdash;including James Corner; Linda Pollak; Alan Berger; Pierre Bolanger; Julia Czerniak; and moremdash;capture the origins; the contemporary milieu; and the aspirations of this relatively new field. The Landscape Urbanism Reader is an inspiring signal to the future of city making as well as an indispensable reference for students; teachers; architects; and urban planners. Sprawl. The word calls to mind a host of troublesome issues such as city flight; runaway suburban development; and the conversion of farmland to soulless housing developments. In Sprawltown; architectural historian Richard Ingersoll makes the surprising claim that sprawl is an inevitable reality of modern life that should be addressed more thoughtfully and recognized as its own new form of urbanism rather than simply being criticized and condemned. In five thought-provoking chapters; covering topics such as tourism; film; and the automobile; Ingersoll takes the position that any solution to the problems of sprawl—including pressing issues like resource use and energy waste—must take into consideration its undeniable success as a social milieu. No screed against the suburb; this book offers a more sophisticated and nuanced view of the way we think about its rapid development and growth. Extraordinary architecture addresses so much more than mere practical considerations. It inspires and provokes while creating a seamless experience of the physical world for its users. It is the rare writer that can frame the discussion of a building in a way that allows the reader to see it with new eyes. Writing About Architecture is a handbook on writing effectively and critically about buildings and cities. Each chapter opens with a reprint of a significant essay written by a renowned architecture critic; followed by a close reading and discussion of the writers strategies. Lange offers her own analysis using contemporary examples as well as a checklist of questions at the end of each chapter to help guide the writer. This important addition to the Architecture Briefs series is based on the authors design writing courses at New York University and the School of Visual Arts. Lange also writes a popular online column for Design Observer and has written for Dwell; Metropolis; New York magazine; and The New York Times. Writing About Architecture includes analysis of critical writings by Ada Louise Huxtable; Lewis Mumford; Herbert Muschamp; Michael Sorkin; Charles Moore; Frederick Law Olmsted; and Jane Jacobs. Architects covered include Marcel Breuer; Diller Scofidio + Renfro; Field Operations; Norman Foster; Frank Gehry; Frederick Law Olmsted; SOM; Louis Sullivan; and Frank Lloyd Wright. During the first two decades of the nineteenth century; two of the most significant theoretical works on color since Leonardo da Vincis Trattato della Pittura were written and published in Germany: Arthur Schopenhauers On Vision and Colors and Philipp Otto Runges Color Sphere. For Schopenhauer; vision is wholly subjective in nature and characterized by processes that cross over into the territory of philosophy. Runges Color Sphere and essay The Duality of Color" contained one of the first attempts to depict a comprehensive and harmonious color system in three dimensions. Runge intended his color sphere to be understood not as a product of art; but rather as a "mathematical figure of various philosophical reflections." By bringing these two visionary color theories together within a broad theoretical contextmdash;philosophy; art; architecture; and designmdash;this volume uncovers their enduring influence on our own perception of color and the visual world around us.
