A novel as intricate and powerful as the bark-cloth paintings at its heart - Anna FunderIn 1968 Papua New Guinea is on the brink of independence; and everything is about to change. Amidst the turmoil filmmaker Leonard arrives from England with his Dutch wife; Rika; to study and film an isolated village high in the mountains. The villagers customs and art have been passed down through generations; and Rika is immediately struck by their paintings on a cloth made of bark. Rika and Leonard are also confronted with the new university in Moresby; where intellectual ambition and the idealism of youth are creating friction among locals such as Milton - a hot-headed young playwright - and visiting westerners; such as Martha; to whom Rika becomes close. But it is when Rika meets brothers Jacob and Aaron that all their lives are changed for ever. Drusilla Modjeskas sweeping novel takes us deep into this fascinating; complex country; whose culture and people cannot escape the march of modernity that threatens to overwhelm them. It is a riveting story of love; loss; grief and betrayal.

It sart at pg 1 goes to pg 22 then starts over. at the second pg 22 it jumps to pg 55.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. avoid this book like its the plagueBy Customerunless youre assigned this book for a grade. avoid this book like its the plague. Not only does the author spectacularly fail to define field-specific vocabulary. leaving the reader adrift in a sea of barely-penetrable jargon. but they also insist on defining commonly-understood terms. Sections that would benefit from diagrams are solid walls of text; conversely. complex ideas are explained almost wholly through images. And. most quite frankly. the book is ugly. The layout is visually unappealing. and in the case of sections of white text on red background. hard to read. For a book centered on visual design. youd think the writer would be better at it.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good for those who arent as theatre-tech savvy.By CassandraIm not usually a tech person but this book (partnered with my instructors lectures) really helped better my understanding of the technical aspects of theatre. The examples are great and I learned a lot.
