An Uncommon Cape: Researching the Histories and Mysteries of a Property

[DOC] An Uncommon Cape: Researching the Histories and Mysteries of a Property by Eleanor Phillips Brackbill at Arts-Photography

Description

Though Seattle is still a young city; growing and changing; much of its short past is already lost-but not forgotten. Generations of Seattleites have fond memories of restaurants; local television shows; stores; and other landmarks that evoke a less sophisticated; more informal city. This new book explores Seattle at a time when timber and fish were more lucrative than airplanes and computers; when the city was a place of kitschy architecture and homespun humor and was full of boundless hope for a brighter future. These rare and vintage images hearken back to the marvels of the 1962 Worlds Fair; shopping trips to Frederick Nelson and I. Magnin; dinners at Rosellinis; dancing at the Trianon Ballroom; traveling on the ferry Kalakala; rooting for baseballs Rainiers; and local personalities including Stan Boreson; J. P. Patches; and Wunda Wunda.

Review
6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Loved this bookBy Jane OharaI loved every page and every sidebar of this book. Its stunningly researched and engagingly written. The authors willingness to track down every detail with an open mind about the answers to the mysteries of her house and land is truly remarkable. Her account of the conflict between Westchester Countys Loyalists and Patriots during the Revolutionary War was my favorite part. but I also loved the story of how a once rural farming area was transformed into one of the U.Ss preeminent suburban communities. Its the story that can apply to many neighborhoods in the Eastern U.S. And of course the mystery of the "monkey rock" is truly fascinating! As Brackbill notes. "everyone lives somewhere." and researching the history of the place you live is available to everyone. For anyone curious about who lived in your home before you did. or what took place on the piece of land where you live. An Uncommon Cape offers really helpful and inspiring advice. Right after finishing the book. I found myself talking to a neighbor who has lived in my century-old apartment building much longer than I have. and picking up some bits of information that I can now pursue. I think my own journey of discovery has begun!
