Fred Zinnemann directed some of the most acclaimed and controversial films of the twentieth century; yet he has been a shadowy presence in Hollywood history. In Fred Zinnemann and the Cinema of Resistance; J. E. Smyth reveals the intellectual passion behind some of the most powerful films ever made about the rise and resistance to fascism and the legacy of the Second World War; from The Seventh Cross and The Search to High Noon; From Here to Eternity; and Julia. Smyths book is the first to draw upon Zinnemanns extensive papers at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and brings Fred Zinnemanns vision; voice; and film practice to life. In his engagement with the defining historical struggles of the twentieth century; Zinnemann fought his own battles with the Hollywood studio system; the critics; and a public bent on forgetting. Zinnemanns films explore the role of women and communists in the antifascist resistance; the Wests support of Franco after the Spanish Civil War; and the darker side of Americas national heritage. Smyth reconstructs a complex and conflicted portrait of Zinnemanns cinema of resistance; examining his sketches; script annotations; editing and production notes; and personal letters. Illustrated with seventy black-and-white images from Smyths collection; Fred Zinnemann and the Cinema of Resistance discusses the directors professional and personal relationships with Spencer Tracy; Montgomery Clift; Audrey Hepburn; Vanessa Redgrave; and Gary Cooper; the critical reaction to his revisionist Western; High Noon; his battles over the censorship of From Here to Eternity; The Nuns Story; and Behold a Pale Horse; his unrealized history of the communist Revolution in China; Mans Fate; and the controversial study of political assassination; The Day of the Jackal. In this intense; richly textured narrative; Smyth enters the mind of one of Hollywoods master directors; redefining our knowledge of his artistic vision and practice.

I thought that it would be more scary than it is. I find that a lot of other books by this publishing company are pretty scary where I dont expect them to be; so I had very high expectations for the scary factor here but the book did not deliver that much of the promise. Except for the shark photos; the other pictures were quite tame. This is really a good thing because the book itself is for kids; and you dont want kids to be too scared of pictures and animals. A lot of kids I know are very sensitive; and probably would not want to be scared to death and to a point of nightmares; so the fact that the creatures are not that scary is good in this instance. Overall; it is a good book for what the title says it is about. I read the book for free for a review.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Some Nice Photographs (Although Who Took The Photos Isnt Mentioned Anywhere); Not Many Animals; Nor TextBy James N SimpsonNot sure what age group this is aimed at; with the author using the pen name Baby Professor; youd assume toddlers but I dont think this book would appeal too much to that age group. It doesnt have a lot of text accompanying the photographs so in one way its similar to a beginner reader book however the words are of a higher reading level comparable to junior non fiction books; however those contain a lot more information than this does. Basically each photo has a paragraph of random information on the creature photographed. There arent many of those creatures either; most are actually on the front cover. The author has taken the time to format the book so it displays well on portable devices like the Kindle Fire HD. This one reads in landscape mode. Photos appear on a page of their own when they are supposed to and others on the same page as their accompanying text when they are supposed to. A lot of self published authors dont take the time to do this resulting in your reading experience being a complete mess so youve got to give accolades when authors care enough about their own work and their readers reading experience when they do. The photographs are high resolution; very clear and high quality; which again isnt always the case with self published kids books. Those photos certainly lift the enjoyment factor of reading this. However there are no photo accreditation anywhere in this book; possibly they were taken by the author but that seems a bit unlikely to me. Got to give the benefit of the doubt that they just forgot to do this but when this is omitted youve got to wonder if the photographers are aware their work is in here. Pictures of sharks; bears and stuff cost a lot of money in equipment; effort in lugging it into their environments and youve also got risk to safety being that they are large predators; not to mention the artistic talent in taking the photograph; so these people should be acknowledged and if they havent been; paid for their photographs too.Nor does the book have a bibliography or any accreditation for sources it is basing its information on . This book claims "the great white shark is responsible for by far the largest number of recorded shark attacks on humans"; really? Every other reputable shark book Ive ever read mentions that bull sharks and tiger sharks have attacked more people that the great white.Book of Scary Creatures on the Planet is more of a book youd get for a kid to look at some nice photos of a few animals than something to actually teach them anything. The photos lift the overall rating of this book as they are that good; but an inclusion of photo accreditation is needed to be added straight away.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The books themselves are not very long (about 18 pages) with well written facts accompanied by amazing pictures. As with all BabBy Kari JacksonIf you have read or downloaded other Baby Professor books then you know exactly what to expect from them. The books themselves are not very long (about 18 pages) with well written facts accompanied by amazing pictures. As with all Baby Professor books the books really take the cake and help to keep young children engaged in the book. My son is only four and has not yet entered public school but we do learning activities at home everyday and this book is just one of many that we have read when learning about animals. The book comes in handy in so many different lesson plans from learning about animals; to learning about how different things can be considered scary. This is a book that we will be able to use again and again. The facts are clearly written in a way that they are easy to understand but do come off as a bit dry but that is easily fixed in the manner in which you read the book. My son loves when I read with a little more enthusiasm than is really required. We will be reading this book many times over. Overall I am happy with what I have received.I received this book for free or at a discount in exchange for my honest opinion in the form of a review and that is exactly what I have provided. My opinion has not been influenced by outside sources in any manner.
