Not sure I remember why this book was recommended; because I think its really sort of old - but dont let that deter you. Antique furniture is not a really "changing" thing - it is what it is. And Mr. Holloway provides a really good historic preamble as to why these types of American furniture are important. Its a good first place to start if you wish to know more about American antique furniture.
