Jobims life. simply set forthBy (((Marco Buendia)))This is a well-researched biography of the bossa nova composer. though the track of that research isnt visible; no notes. though there are in-text references. in many cases. Also. no index.The author very much follows the authors life. rather than delving into particulars of the songs; over the whole. readers wont find much information on specific songs. which are usually just listed in conjunction with remarks on compositions of a certain period. or when discussing recording or performances. There is. however. a carminologue. so to speak. at the end of the book. with associated discography.Enjoyable reading for those with a settled interest in Jobim. though it doesnt offer any great insight. The author appears to have a good command of jazz literature from the United States. This is a musical biography of a musical man. with a lot of emphasis on recording sessions in both Brazil and the USA. The author generally avoids gossipy elements. except where such stuff is essential to the story of the music. We hear. for instance. that Elis Regina was a hot-tempered. difficult person. but of course the record Jobim made with Regina is widely considered to be among his best. and besides. Reginas fighting with Jobim led to her husband getting to do the arrangements. so theres some purpose in the personal business. Jobims drift away from his first wife and his marriage to a woman half his age is covered. but only minimally and not salaciously. I think Jobim was. aside from that episode. quite a clean liver and offered little toehold for tale-bearing. and the reader is very favorably impressed with Jobim the man as well as the artist.Some photos. in black and white. Generally pretty plain Portuguese. for those who arent native to the language.
