Architects of Little Rock: 1833-1950

[ePub] Architects of Little Rock: 1833-1950 by Jr. Witsell; Gordon G. Wittenberg in Arts-Photography

Description

Explicit material is more widely available in the internet age than ever before; yet the concept of lsquo;obscenityrsquo; remains as difficult to pin down as it is to approach without bias: notions of what is lsquo;obscenersquo; shift with societiesrsquo; shifting mores; and our responses to explicit or disturbing material can be highly subjective. In this intelligent and sensitive book; Kerstin Mey grapples with the work of twentieth-century artists practising at the edges of acceptability; from Hans Bellmer through to Nobuyoshi Araki; from Robert Mapplethorpe to Annie Sprinkle; and from Hermann Nitsch to Paul McCarthy. Mey refuses sweeping statements and lsquo;knee-jerkrsquo; responses; arguing with dexterity that some works; regardless of their lsquo;high artrsquo; context; remain deeply problematic; whilst others are both groundbreaking and liberating.

While the author does take the reader through the assembly process on several pieces; its more an explanation of why certain pieces are chosen; what they represent; why they are assembled the way they are; and the emotions and feelings that they trigger than a step-by-step lesson. It is more a book about finding and releasing your creativity...emphasized by inspiring quotes; autobiographical vignettes; beautiful poetry and encouraging words from the author explaining each creation journey...encouragement that will inspire any artist - visual; literary or musical - to move forward on their own creation journey.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. just okBy Grace Ann PolonIt felt like the artist didnt really want us to see a close step by stop view of what she did.Unfortunately I didnt understand the complete concept of this book before I purchased it.I wasnt counting on the psychological guidance portion and didnt really need that much at all.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
