Around Phoenixville (Postcard History Series)

[DOC] Around Phoenixville (Postcard History Series) by Vincent Martino Jr. at Arts-Photography

Description

The first nonnative settlers arrived in Ragged Island; as Carbondale was then known; around 1802. Twenty years later; brothers William and Maurice Wurts were exploring the wilderness when they took note of several outcroppings of ldquo;curious black stones.rdquo; These stones turned out to be anthracite coal; and the two Philadelphia businessmen became pioneers in Americarsquo;s Industrial Revolution. Carbondalersquo;s journey has taken many twists and turns during the past two centuries. The colorful and fascinating mosaic of images in Carbondale gives the reader a glimpse into the heart of small-town America and a clear picture of this historic cityrsquo;s past.

I did not grow up in Phoenixville. but my dad and his vast extended family did and I spent a lot of time there {plus I worked on the North side for about 7 yrs in the early 90s}. As I hit 50 I remember all that Phoenixville was to me; the curfew whistle. my Uncle working at Wallys Exxon. Dogwood parade. Heine road. the Hunky club. the stairs at Grants. the retired steel workers hanging out in front of Seacrists on a nice day. Chestnut drive. the 1976 wagon train. Sprockets . Dells. and many more. Vincent did a good job on bringing the town picture history back to life and I will have give this book as gifts to my relatives who still reside and remember Phoenixville.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
