This volume gathers contributions from a range of international scholars and geopolitical contexts to explore why people organise themselves into performance communities in sites of crisis and how performance ndash; social and aesthetic; sanctioned and underground ndash; is employed as a mechanism for survival. The chapters treat a wide range of what can be considered survival; ranging from sheer physical survival; to the survival of a social group with its own unique culture and values; to the survival of the very possibility of agency and dissent. Performance as a form of political resistance and protest plays a large part in many of the essays; but performance does more than that: it enables societies in crisis to continue to define themselves. By maintaining identities that are based on their own chosen affiliations and not defined solely in opposition to their oppressors; individuals and groups prepare themselves for a post-crisis future by keeping alive their own notions of who they are and who they hope to be.

( since I already have the original version) I gave it to a good friend who was very gratefulBy MakeupRulesThe book is pricey; and I was expecting for the whole book to have updated images and text. The revisions are minimal... Most of the old photos are still there and everything feels outdated. For me; this was not worth it;( since I already have the original version) I gave it to a good friend who was very grateful0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I do not hate it though because it was useful in the tips it gave. I do find hands on learning to be more useful for myself; but this is a great stepping stone for anyone with an interest in stage make-up who might not have a clue to where to start.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good for your make up classBy Annie BrickmanWas a little sad when I found out it is black and white all the way through except for the chapter Make ups in color. Good information; but boring to look through and read and the pictures are a little out of date. Condition was less good than I expected too. The content is great; but if you dont need it for a class - find something better.
