And it seems like it is going to be another mother trying to find herself with her kids thing - its not. Fran is a cynical; amusing and very self-aware New Yorker finding her high heeled feet in Singapore. There are many laugh aloud insights in here and its a great portrait of expat life. The narrative is supposed to be some kind of internal dialoged but that mostly covers for abrupt jumps in time; space and topic. Major themes get introduced and dropped.A woman gets a chance of a life time to live a very well to do life in an exotic setting complete with a live in maid and a very wise and supportive circle of friends. As she drinks; smokes parties and whines and complains about mostly herself; we are supposed to feel what?Whatever the difference is between self-depreciating humor and self-loathing pathology this FL pounds on past that limit - the one pleasure of her life is running - only her book has you dragging behind gasping for some sign of relief.Run away. Save yourself.
