Thomas Wilmer Dewing (1851 ndash; 1938) was an American painter working at the turn of the 20th century. He was a founding member of the Ten American Painters and taught at the Art Students League of New York. The Art Museum at the Smithsonian Institution has a room dedicated to his works. Dewing is best known for his tonalist paintings; a genre of American art that was rooted in English Aestheticism. Dewings preferred vehicle of artistic expression is the refined; aristocratic female figure situated in a moody and dreamlike surrounding. Often seated playing instruments; writing letters; or simply communicating with one another; Dewings sensitively portrayed figures have a detachment from the viewer that keeps the spectator a remote witness to the scene rather than a participant. His works are in private collections and museums in the United States. At the Freer Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution; a room is devoted to Dewings paintings.

That is the case with any ranking; especially the lower on the list. Consensus binds the higher choices. But taking the natural out of it; this is an excellent book! As good as his hundred (plus) greatest novels and hundred greatest writers. My list would have applause at times; boos and catcalls at others. Nature of the beast. But a mighty fine beast it is. I recommend the compilers other two books mentioned above. Another great overview from BartBy GJCI dont enjoy reading plays as much as I do novels so my knowledge of the drama canon is a little less thorough; but this overview of the top 100 plays is enjoyable and interesting. As an added bonus I let my high school drama students look at the list an encourage them to read as many as possible.
