After a devastating fish kill on the Klamath River; tribal members and theatre artist Theresa May developed a play to give voice to the central spiritual and cultural role of salmon in tribal life. Salmon Is Everything presents the script of that play; along with essays by artists and collaborators that illuminate the process of creating and performing theatre on Native and environmental issues.Salmon Is Everything simultaneously illuminates the logistics of a crisis in the third largest watershed in the Pacific Northwestmdash;the premature death of more than 30;000 salmon on the Lower Klamath River in 2002mdash;and documents what happened when one community decided to use art to amplify the experiences of its members. The fish kill had unprecedented impact throughout the watershed; and for many tribal communities it signified an ongoing loss of traditional cultural practices. But in the political and ecological upheaval that followed; the role of salmon in tribal life went largely unacknowledged; which inspired the collaboration between May and members of the Yurok; Hoopa Valley; and Karuk tribes; as well as farmers; ranchers; and others invested in the Klamath watershed.Salmon is Everything will appeal to readers interested in the environmental and cultural history of the Pacific Northwest and the ecological and civil challenges its communities face. For artists and activists; itrsquo;s a useful case study. Salmon is Everything offers a unique interdisciplinary resource for high school and college level courses in environmental studies; Native American studies; and theatre arts education.

What for many could be perceived as a giant leap from the deabauchery of sex; drugs and rock nroll to the sanctity of ancient (and not soancient) mystery cults which celebrated our essential connections with the "powers that be"; is presentd as a seamless extention of our inate ability and "need" ashuman beings to participate in and enjoy life to the fullest. Music; by whatever form we experience it; is not a spectator sport but an invitation to join in the dance. When we FEEL the noise; we resonate with the harmony of the spheres; and are truly integrated within the unfathomable chain of being. I must admit that when I first looked through the book; I thought "yech!". After reading "The Bushman Way of Tracking God" by Keeney ; I felt I had to explore The Secret History. I found the two books to be a whole greater than the sum of its parts. This was a very enjoyable mind and body experience.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. High weirdness on the music scene. Enjoy.By zap hendersonThis writer does what most great thinkers accomplish; find the hidden associations between different ideas and makes the connection. I think this a highly original take on history; music; and culture. Bravo!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Pagan RockersBy S. CranowOne tour de force book that cover the real history of rock and roll all the way from its historic beginnings in Egypt. The cult of Isis and Osiris took on many forms as it moved to Greece. Ecstatic music and feasting occurred and it found its way in the Eleusinian mysteries and Dionysian mysteries. The book traces the evolution of these cults into the modern day rock and roll.
