ROCK ON!!!By lindsay devereuxFirst Published in 1970 and then updated in 1973 Nik Cohns observations during the historic Rock and Roll revolutionof the 50s 60s remains unsurpassed in music journalism.Nik was one of the first of the Rock and Roll commentators in print media long before Rolling Stone magazine. Some other U.K. Publications such as Melody Maker etc were operational but Niks regular print contibutions still standout today.Superb Book!!Must own! for all those who have an interest in the 50S and 60S and for all of us who were there and can fondly rememberthe absolute best eras in Rock music!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A quick overview but a decent readBy Shakey JonesCohn is stuck in his ways. he admits it. and Id agree with him on most things but he makes it hard to view the general consensus of his topic because its all in his opinion. Hes describing the history of rock n roll. but hes also one sided. He has extensive noting on the fads in England. and while he attempts to equal his observations of America. he generally fails to do the states justice. Hes good for a quick timeline and a brush up on the basics. Hes good if you like high school. or teeny bopper sleeper jams from the forties and fifties. but hes jaded if you want the whole picture. The book was written in the early seventies. and its almost comical how oblivious he was to the wave of American rock n roll about to come up. Theres a faint mention of The Velvets. but no mention of the MC5 or The Stooges. The text and these bands mightve never crossed paths but it wouldve shook up the experience a bit. Even if the MC5 and Stooges had yet to pop up. there was still a wave of Detroit rock n roll before them and the blues rock that came before. Sun Ra. The Amboy Dukes and so on. I guess what it comes down too is that Cohn and I have different tastes. but that shouldnt get in the way of a decent historiography. He felt the need to write about everything and nothing at the same time. barely brushing by the bands he claimed himself to be most important to relish on the tid bits of forgotten boy groups just to get their name in.
