[ebooks] Bacchae: Full Text and Introduction (NHB Drama Classi) by Euripides in Arts-Photography

Description

Architect and artist Roger Kemble has demonstrated his ideas of urban design with images from sixteen major Canadian citiesmdash;among others. He has walked; measured; and sketched their streets; squares and places; scanned their horizons; probed the relationships between structures; land and landscape with unprecedented energy. More significantly; he has reacted to the negative effect that all the busy business of urban development is having on our daily lives and he has had the courage to offer concrete remedial plans. If; as Kemble (quoting Ruskin); reminds us: Architecture is the mother of the arts; then time spent with his bold; imaginative; idiosyncratic view of the making (and unmaking) of citiesmdash;drawn with passionate hindsight and compassionate foresightmdash;will be a moving and healing experience.Through the beckoning text of The Canadian City and its 144 illustrations; we will come to know the map of our own country and city as never before. The long shadow cast by this knowledge will make us more aware travellers abroad; too. Principles of city living and city building will accompany us everywhere; with an unsuspecting vividness. There is only a short step from Roger Kembles studio to the world.

New Insights Into the Role of Art in WarBy Walter IdlewildHere is a fascinating study of the role of women artists in the depiction of armed conflict. The authors begin with the War of American Independence; then move on to the Civil War; both world wars; the cold war; and finally into the battles of the 21st century. In the process readers are treated to profiles of scores of creative individuals; from Henrietta de Beaulieu Deering Johnston (c. 1670-1728); the first professional woman artist; to our own dayrsquo;s Pamela Jade Scott; the first female in the army firefighter military occupational specialty (MOS).The authors describe women artists working not only in traditional media such as quilting; needlework and embroidery; but also in the male-dominated fields of painting; sculpture and photography. Not accepted into art schools until the late 19th century; women soon turned from portrait and still life paintings to treatments of history and landscape. By telling the story of these creative women in times of conflict; the authors have filled an important lacuna in the annals of art and war.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Artistic Women dealing with War.......By Cynthia L. MoreheadIts wonderful to see so many womens artistic works in one book! War is a very serious action that affects not only the men and women who are in he middle of the struggle but the people supporting them. The artist have a huge job of translating the emotions of the struggle into a visial dimension. Not always an east task but I think the book shows that their efforts were well shown to be successful. Artistic works should not be gendered; but on this occasion it shows the strength of the women art works represented. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to see strong artistic art works by women affected by war.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. American Women ArtistsBy KLThis is a very special book in tribute to women in support of our countrys armed services. Only wish all the paintings could have been printed in color. I am sure it was a cost issue. Great job by the authors researching and interviewing.
