Conductor Paul MacAlindin worked tirelessly and against great odds to help fulfil the dream of Iraqi youth who wanted to play in an orchestra. The book details the summers spent in Iraq rehearsing together; trips to the UK; France; and Germany to play at festivals and interact with European youth orchestras; and finally the bitter end of the orchestra as the Islamic State destroyed any sense of security in which art and culture can grow. Pauls insights into the politics; machinations; and personal impact on the young musicians make the historical narrative relevant and colorful. The book is called Upbeat; but joy and sorrow are doled out each in good measure.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Provides fascinating insight into the culture of Iraq; the true and unseen impacts of warfare; and the logistics of setting up and establishing a youth orchestra - in a country not noted for Western orchestral music. Very readable; interesting; and all told in an uplifting and positive manner. Inspirational.
