His observations are forthright and told matter-of-factly; as if in a common conversation. That being said; the expectations might be high and what the reader gets is not as salacious or torrid as most autobiographies. The book carries on in a linear fashion beginning; of course; with his childhood; his addiction to drums and his determination to follow through on his love of drumming. Ambitious; he lands several gigs and ends up with a hot central England group called lsquo;Amen Cornerrsquo;. lsquo;Amen Cornerrsquo; becomes a relatively successful charting band in the UK and the author explains his excitement at being in the music scene and meeting and sometimes playing with the likes of Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. Itrsquo;s an interesting read but not earth-shattering. Itrsquo;s not until more than 1/3 through the book before we hear about the Bee Gees.Auditioning for the Bee Gees was non-eventful but an obvious thrill for Dennis Bryon who had no idea what his future would bring. The rest of the book focuses on touring with and being part of the Bee Gees family. Itrsquo;s an exciting trip; flying around the world and touring with a major band. Itrsquo;s interesting to note that he joined the band at the lowest point in their career; so the rise was particularly sharp. He details that with an expose on experiences with each album he recorded on. lsquo;Saturday Night Feverrsquo; was somewhat of an explosion that Bryon explains in detail along with the follow up album. Itrsquo;s not until the peak of the bands success do we read anything that sparks of ill-will.The firing of the Bee Gees most successful back-up bands is the one part of the book that takes the reader in. In-fighting with producers; band members and the Gibbs turns into a riches to rags story that makes one take a truly different look at the music business and the Gibb brothers in particular. Itrsquo;s a nasty experience. There is life after the Bee Gees and Bryon is able to find good in the aftermath. Andy Gibb is mentioned in the later years; but Robin and Maurice seem to be missing. His final chapters focus on his wives and subsequent tragedies. The ending is as upbeat as one could expect. However; this is a fast read and a G-rated one told with the heart of a saint. Unlike other biographies involving the Bee Gees; you can be sure this has the Gibb family blessing.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Unsung heroBy Lewis ShinerWhen you consider that the author is a drummer; this is quite well written. (As a drummer; I get to say that.) Dennis Bryon is one of my heroes and this book gave me the behind the scenes info I was looking for. I especially liked the technical details of the studio sessions. I was very anti-disco in the 70s; but have subsequently come to appreciate the incredible craftsmanship on the BeeGees records from the period. Bryon was a fundamental part of that sound; giving the records an unshakable momentum and yet magically making them swing at the same time. Kudos also to the BeeGees themselves for playing on their own records (especially Maurices bass work) and using the same band in the studio that they used on tour. According to the book; the whole disco thing was Bryons idea. This strained my credulity a bit; but on the other hand; its hard to overestimate his contribution to these brilliant records.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. His life with and without the Bee GeesBy Joseph BrennanI highly recommend the book and not only for the Bee Gees content. It has some instructive lessons in how one contact leads to another when people like you and the amount of effort you put in. Of course in his case it did lead to him being Bee Gees drummer for a few years; but thats not his whole story. As an American I did not realize how big his earlier band Amen Corner were in Britain. While he leaves you wanting more in some places; nonetheless whats here is an entertaining and touching collection of reminiscences.
