Description

Intermingling architectural; cultural; and religious history; Louis Nelson reads Anglican architecture and decorative arts as documents of eighteenth-century religious practice and belief. In The Beauty of Holiness; he tells the story of the Church of England in colonial South Carolina; revealing how the colonys Anglicans negotiated the tensions between the persistence of seventeenth-century religious practice and the rising tide of Enlightenment thought and sentimentality. Nelson begins with a careful examination of the buildings; grave markers; and communion silver fashioned and used by early Anglicans. Turning to the religious functions of local churches; he uses these objects and artifacts to explore Anglican belief and practice in South Carolina. Chapters focus on the role of the senses in religious understanding; the practice of the sacraments; and the place of beauty; regularity; and order in eighteenth-century Anglicanism. The final section of the book considers the ways church architecture and material culture reinforced social and political hierarchies. Richly illustrated with more than 250 architectural images and photographs of religious objects; The Beauty of Holiness depends on exhaustive fieldwork to track changes in historical architecture. Nelson imaginatively reconstructs the history of the Church of England in colonial South Carolina and its role in public life; from its early years of ambivalent standing within the colony through the second wave of Anglicanism beginning in the early 1750s.

"A Coastline Mecca in Southern California"By Russell A. Rohde MD"Dana Point: Images of America"; by Doris I. Walker; Arcadia Publishing; CA 2007. ISBN 978-0-7385-4732-9. SC; 128 pages. Intro.; 9 Chapters; many B W photos. 9 1/4" x 6 1/2".Accomplished; published writer; Doris Walker (Dana Point resident of 44 years OC commissioner) provides an authentic historical-to-modern-day times chronicle of Dana Points development from a towering majestic rocky prominence and watery cove (as narrated by Richard Henry Danas 1840 classic "Two Years Before the Mast") into its present time status as a world-class modern city marina for thousands of private boats; visitors and its residents. The story is narrated; importantly; by c. 250 B W semi-gloss photographs; both from archived files and taken by the author include aerial views; showing the progressive development of an undeveloped sailing ship port; halfway betwixt San Diego and San Pedro. Early development plans; thwarted by the Great Depression of `29; ultimately; with perseverance and development of roads; railroads freeways; grew into a spectacular magnificent attestation via marine and land engineering marvels; mostly between the late 1950s and 1971; so its largely pristine; new clean but retaining significant cultural reminders of its earlier days including the famed Latern Streets (their colored lamps once denoting specific ships in bay); rugged landscaping; large recreational areas for townspeople and visitors; and an active Ocean Institute at the Harbor. In 1989 the consortium of Monarch Beach (north) and towns of Capistrano Beach (south) joined Dana Point to form the new City of Dana Point; an awesome gem of developed coastline between Laguna Beach and Doheny Beach. The photographic narrative is splendid as it traces the progressive development of a rocky promontory into the distinctive cultural Mecca in Southern California. The marina boasts eateries; small shops and paths along the shoreline and breakwaters frequented with brown pelicans; herons; gulls making walking enjoyable for landlubbers in fresh ocean breezes. As a California Native; I found the authors book accurate; timely and highly informative.
