WaldenOf all the books Ive purchased recently about the art of felting; none; until this one; have given much specific information about the material - wool. Jenne Giles book has a wonderful section on materials which I found very informative. Especially with regards to why some types of wool may not be appropriate for different projects; etc. Jenne makes it clear how each type of wool behaves and how it reacts with other materials you want to incorporate into your work; such as specialty wools; silk fibers and plant fibers. She also manages to enlighten the student without removing the "magic" that comes from that moment when your design holds together and becomes fabric!When I first began this journey of learning the craft I looked at this book and decided it was too "advanced" for me. I was wrong! It has some beautiful pictures of what artists have done with felting (including the author); however; it gives some very nice instruction on projects that can easily be done by a beginner. With each project in the book she adds a bit of information about going steps further to create an advanced version of the project; showing what else can be done with a little more effort and practice.In fact; I enjoyed Jennes book so much that I contacted her to have a class. I was lucky to catch her for a one-on-one class before her busy season started and have now gained more confidence with handling the materials and tools to begin creating some pretty fun stuff.You will not regret adding this book to your collection.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great for your coffee table rather than the studioBy jonilI havent warmed to this book albeit I love Giles work; particularly the large wrap with geometric shapes (shaped like a cloak seen on her blog) and the flower scarves. It comes down to procedures. Giles shows you how to shape the felt for a garment while it hangs from the dress dummy. Perhaps Im unadventurous but I dont see myself shaping felt this way. But its interesting to see how Giles goes about it. Also the `couture aspect doesnt entice me. I can sew and do sew the pieces together when making a garment but I prefer felting over the seams and producing seamless garments that you can wear two ways. Seams can make the garment unnecessarily bulky.So I dont know what possessed me to try out the `Flower Scarf on pp.94-95. Theres quite a lot of felting involved in this project; particularly in the shaping of the petals to achieve a sculptural effect. Giles gives you just enough to make a sample so that it doesnt quite work out looking exactly like her own creations (rather like potters who leave out the one important detail or ingredient in glaze so that copyists will not be able to copy). I have made three versions of the flower scarf and been unhappy with all three. I heard a friend and textile artist lament that her famous Rose Scarf was not included in this publication. Itd be interesting to see whether other readers have been happy with the projects theyve made from this book. Felt Fashion: Couture Projects from Garments to AccessoriesBy Jo AnnThere are relatively few felting books on the market unless you are looking for school and child based projects. The description of this book on-line was a good guide as it implied the book provided many ideas for felt projects. Many specific craft objects are quite bizarre but the point is that the book offers a large number of felting techniques and good explanation of the felting techniqes.If someone wants a felting book on techniques and enjoys going to the edge in felt crafts; this is a terrific book. If someone wants a good array of felt techniques; this is also a terrific book.
