An excellent contribution to understanding the mystery of DylanBy Henry BloncarteI devoured this book fast; firstly because Im a lifelong listener to Dylans poetry; and secondly because the shape of McCarrons argument provides a new; thought-provoking light to cast on Dylans mystery. He takes complex psychological theory and advances it cogently it to explore the life of a figure who has been evasive when it comes to his acts art. The theory he uses (script theory) is no cakewalk; but here it is made accessible; and whats even better is that it really does seem to be a worthwhile way to explore Dylans transformations. The chapters lay out a form quality that persists across these transformations; which pay heed to Dylans religiosity and the anxieties of the last century. Its a helluva task; and its executed well here. In the hands of a lesser writer; this analysis could have come across as wooden; or reductive. But McCarron makes a solid contribution to understanding one of the most productive and mysterious artists of our time and introduces to a large audience the power that scripts play in shaping inner lives.
