This is the story of what became a non-commercial theatre group; with the focus on the role women played in all aspects of theatre production. Traditionally; men held control of all areas of theatre with the exception of acting. The driving force behind the philosophy of this group was the belief that essential to the growth of Americas people; as a nation; was the expression of their intrinsic social and spiritual nature. The women who participated found; through their work in the group; the opportunity to give voice to their need for artistic and intellectual expression. This afforded these women the opportunity to fully realize themselves as individual and highly functioning members of the theatre community. Some of the women the reader learns of are Edna St. Vincent Millay; Susan Glaspell; Louise Bryant to name just a few. The author began this book as a dissertation topic. As a result; I felt the books style tends to be pedantic and a bit wordy. The volume; however; is invaluable as a document that educates the reader to the important role the Provincetown Players established in the development of non-commercial theatre in America and particularly the overwhelming contribution made by these remarkable women.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Pioneer Women of American TheatreBy Suzanne H. KellyFor anyone interested in theatre; and particularly womn who are involved in the theatre; this is an eye-opening experience! There are so many actresses; writers; directors and producers of theatre that were members of this famous American theatre company that we moderns have never heard of; have forgotten about or know so few details of. This book is full of fascinating personal and professional information; it makes you want to read abiographies of all concerned. They lived in such an interesting time and this book illuminates the changing; highly charged atmosphere of the time; when ideologies like anarchy; communism; free love; feminism were in full bloom. Today we think of the sixties as the radical era and the beginnings of the feminist movement; but the sixties pale in comparison to this exciting and volatile time! To be able to effect so much change must have been so exciting and these were remarkable women indeed; all the more wonderful to learn more about them and their lives and considerable accomplishments. Its truly inspirational to women in the theatre who continue to this day to face discrimination and the perceived "novelty" of their success in male-dominated roles in the production of theatre as well as plays written about women; with strong; female characters and non-traditional lifestyles.
