Anderson20 YEARS after the death of Wilde; near the end of W1; some crackpot Brit fanatics (right-wingers) decided the decadents (gays and les) were responsible for the war and Germany had a Black Book of 47;000 top UK names who could be compromised. Amid this craziness; which also was very anti-semitic; the "modern" American dancer Maude Allan had to defend herself doing; what her persecutor called; a lewd dance of Salome; based on the Wilde play. Lord Alfred Douglas said she and Wilde were both evil. Its an insane (1918) story and could only have happened in the UK; which has remained forever haunted by the Wilde case. Author Hoare gives an incisive report of an absurd corner of history (which I was unaware of); and I highly recommend.
