ldquo; The Dignity of Every Human Beingrdquo; studies the vibrant New Brunswick artistic community which challenged ldquo;the tyranny of the Group of Sevenrdquo; with socially-engaged realism in the 1930s and 40s. Using extensive archival and documentary research; Kirk Niergarth follows the work of regional artists such as Jack Humphrey and Miller Brittain; writers such as P.K. Page; and crafts workers such as Kjeld and Erica Deichmann. The book charts the rise and fall of ldquo;social modernismrdquo; in the Maritimes and the stylersquo;s deep engagement with the social and economic issues of the Great Depression and the Popular Front.Connecting local; national; and international cultural developments; Niergarthrsquo;s study documents the attempts of Depression-era artists to question conventional ideas about the nature of art; the social function of artists; and the institutions of Canadian culture. ldquo; The Dignity of Every Human Beingrdquo; records an important and previously unexplored moment in Canadian cultural history.

Ive always loved clothes and accessories; frequent great thrift shops; adore colors. Ari Seth Cohen has given me a peer group and mentors to admire. I was about to send a cowboy shirt Ive never worn back to the thrift shop when I found his site (and Sziporah Salamons sp? at the same time.) Instead I wore it out to dinner and was complimented and felt terrific. They cant ease us out; if we stand out and stand up for color and glamor and creativity! Thanks thanks for this inspiring book.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great book.By Dona BrandtJust got the book today and have already devoured twice . It gave me so much pleasure to go over it; page by page. The pictures are stunning; and learning a bit about each of these exciting women was fun! As a mature" woman myself; I found it freeing to see what bolder women than I are wearing and looking great in! It also gave me the courage to don some of the bright and upbeat things Ive secretly been wishing I could wear. Take a look at it; its great!
