Something for Everyone - Him and HerBy Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie BrodyBoyfriend Sweaters by Bruce Weinstein. with photos by Jared Flood. is being touted as having patterns for both him and her. "Rediscover the boyfriend sweater. a versatile garment that both guys and girls will fall head over heels for." The book contains 19 different patterns of "menswear-inspired projects made to work on both men and women." The techniques used in the book are varied: brioche stitch. reversible cables. Fair Isle. and include "seaming instructions to give your projects a professional finish".The introduction is brief but contains a lot of helpful and essential information such as how this book approaches sizing. line and drape. reading schematics. understanding charts. getting gauge. selvedge stitches. increasing and decreasing. picking up stitches. machine sewing a zipper. sewing seams. sewing rows to rows. sewing stitches to stitches. and cables - a true abundance of riches in terms of learning techniques.The second project is an Oversized Turtleneck. perfect for him or her. Its a roomy sweater and sizing goes up to XXXL or 60" chest - very generous. It is knit with Rowan Felted Tweed Aran. a perfect yarn for this project.There is a section on Texture which is all about "the look and feel of the knit fabric". The choices for this section are wonderful. The Shaker Cardigan is classic. Knit with Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Hand Dyes (50% alpaca and 50% merino). it is a brown-hued cardigan with a V-neck and a ribbed body. The Linen Scarf or Wrap is knit with Manos del Uraguay Silk Blend. Knitting the pattern horizontally gives it a more masculine look while knitting it lengthwise makes it look more feminine. The colors in Manos colorways are endless. The stitch is a linen stitch which gives the project a look of having been woven.One of my favorite patterns is the Seed Placket Pullover. Knit in a beautiful variegated green from Shibui Knits Merino Worsted. it utilizes leather buttons and has a placket collar. It is truly perfect for him or her. The Honeycomb Pullover is also perfect for male or female. It is "right out of the pages of an Italian fashion magazine - chic and casual." It is knit with Louet Gems. 100% merino wool and it has - what else - a honeycomb pattern!There are some retro patterns towards the end which are not my thing but may appeal to those of you into the vintage look.All in all. there is something in this book for everyone. Love this book - great traditional styled sweatersBy readergirlThis is a great pattern book of classicly styled sweaters. They are unisex pullovers cardigans with some unique details like shawl collars and asymmetrical zippers. As I am getting older. Ive found that my formerly girlish figure is becoming more boxy. so the more classicly cut sweaters. when made with great attention to detail. are more appealing and. I think. more flattering. I have yet to actually knit anything from this book. but am looking forward to the "seed placket pullover". the "color block jersey" and the "off center half zip mock turtle". ReynoldsAs a guy who knits. its frustrating to find either nothing but books on knitting for women. or really bad patterns for guys. This book so far seems to be a great addition to my library as not only do the patterns look interesting and not too complex for early knitters. but also they are mostly all really nice patterns and designs. I also really like the book binding and paper - not slick and hard to thumb through. which makes the book nice to browse.I would highly recommend this book for guys who knit. or women who are looking for good patterns. As I start knitting these Ill come back and add to this review.
