A HIGHLY PRACTICAL AND ESSENTIAL RESOURCE!!!!!!By COSMIC TRAVELERAre you a beginner or a professional interior space planner? If you are; then this book is for you. Authors Mark Karlen and Rob Fleming; have written the fourth edition of an outstanding book that is intended to help intermediate-level interior architecture and design students.Authors Karlen and Fleming; begin by describing the space planning process that begins when the planning problem is presented to you and ends when physical planning commences; usually with bubble diagrams or block plans. In addition; they describe the physical planning process and the development of a floor plan; with all of its broader spatial and design implications. The authors also deal with specific floor plan arrangements; defining a proposed architectural reality. Then; they continue by providing you with an overview of each area of general planning and design background fundamentally important to the space planning process. The authors then cover the relevant consultants (who are lighting designers); code specialist; acoustic consultants; and furniture and equipment manufactures representatives. Next; they go step by step through the development of a rough or first-phase floor plan. In addition; the authors first describe the transition phase of the planning process in full detail; some comments on drawing quality and presentation technique are added as a natural supplement to the planning process. They also provide the basic ideas and directions for you to develop skills beyond the basic level of achievement called for in the program/building shell exercises throughout the book. Finally; the authors reveal that there are some basic differences between designing stairs within an existing building and stairs within a new structure that is in the process of being designed; knowledge of building codes and standards for providing for disabled users is critical to designing realistic and workable stairs; and; terminology related to stairs can lead to some confusion or misunderstanding of design or construction issues. This excellent book is meant not only to be read; but also to be worked with as a hands-on guide in the development of creative skills. In addition; the step-by-step process of space planning described in this great book; is deliberately geared to the learning of a complex skill.
