One type of analysis cannot fit every play; nor does one method of interpretation suit every theatre artist or collaborative team. This is the first text to combine traditional and non-traditional models; giving students a range of tools with which to approach different kinds of performance.

A Ragtime DelightBy Washington ReaderBrun Campbell. nicknamed ldquo; The Ragtime Kid.rdquo; has long been a person of interest to ragtime devotees and music scholars. However. Brunrsquo;s tendency to embellish the truth and to tell multiple versions of any one story made him a difficult subject for historians. In this excellent biography. Larry Karp uses original. never-published material. including letters. notes and music written in Brunrsquo;s own hand. to document a most unusual life. From his days as an itinerant pianist to his dreams of glory for his mentor. Scott Joplin. Brunrsquo;s life unfolds in a truth-is-stranger-than-fiction fashion.Karp reveals Brun as a dreamer who lacked the skills to make those dreams into reality. He is a liar who believes his own lies. a scalawag who blunders forth with the best of intentions. I am not a serious lover of ragtime but by the end of this book. I was a true fan of Brun Campbell. Karp has taken pieces of original music. unrelated correspondence. old radio show transcripts. published and unpublished articles. and a mishmash of other material and has fashioned all of it together to form a fascinating biography of a colorful and endearing character.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Vibrant biography of a ragtime originalBy Carol BinkowskiLarry Karp has creatively taken a wealth of recently discovered documents. letters. miscellaneous writings. and related memorabilia and transformed them into an extraordinary biography of Brun Campbell. an often neglected yet significant figure in the history of ragtime. He traces Campbellrsquo;s life by first quoting excerpts from these original writings and then by interspersing pertinent. in-depth historical information and commentary on each segment. The result is astounding. Campbell comes fully to life ndash; a man. musician. composer. traveler. adventurer. and reflection of the ragtime era in which he lived and eventually outlived. His sometimes embellished accounts of his experiences as well as the people and events along the way make for absorbing reading and provide a distinctive sense of his enigmatic personality. At the close of the 1800s and entranced by the sound of ragtime. the teenaged Campbell ndash; soon dubbed ldquo; The Ragtime Kidrdquo; ndash; ran away to Sedalia. Missouri. to find Scott Joplin and take lessons from him in the art of playing ragtime piano. The success of this youthful mission had an impact that lasted his entire life. leading to work as an itinerant pianist. the accumulation of a solid repertoire. an interest in composing his own works. and a role in championing ragtime long after the era faded. As Campbell matured and ragtime gave way to other musical styles. he settled into everyday life and worked as a barber. During the 1940s. however. a revival of interest in ragtime was growing. and Campbell not only joined the cause but also made it his goal to bring Joplinrsquo;s music and singular contributions to the forefront once more.Larry Karp brings all of it vibrantly alive. Along with well-chosen selections of Brun Campbellrsquo;s writings and thoroughly researched and superbly presented background material. there is also a wealth of other information ndash; including additional details/commentary by such noted musician/scholars as David Reffkin and Richard Egan as well as helpful resources for further study ndash; lists of compositions. readings. recordings. interview transcripts. etc. Rare photographs nicely complement the text. This is a ldquo;mustrdquo; for ragtime music and history fans ndash; extremely informative and a truly absorbing read. And Karprsquo;s Ragtime Trilogy makes for especially appealing companion reading ndash; a group of fine novels based on ragtime history with Brun Campbell playing a starring role in two of the three.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful book.By EdBEssential reading for anyone who wants to understand the history of the ragtime years. Campbell was on the scene and knew key players. The problem with his testimony. though. is that he was terribly inconsistent and his word was unreliable. Karp. using materials never before available. carefully scrutinizes Campbellrsquo;s accounts and straightens them out. He explains what in Campbellrsquo;s stories is likely. probable. or possible. and what is unlikely and false.
